Scott and White Hospital was founded in 1897 in Temple, Texas, and has been a leader in comprehensive, compassionate care in Texas Medicine ever since. Scott and White has received national and international recognition for its clinical trials that focus on improving patient care, as well as its cancer, orthopedic and cardiovascular care programs. With Dr. Arthur Frankel at the helm, Scott and White's New Cancer Research Institute is paving the way for new methods of treatment for cancer patients across the country.
Can you believe our forefathers were the originators of the current miracle drug penicillin? Texas was originally occupied by the Cherokee, Caddo, Coahuiltecan, Comanche and other Indian tribes. Each tribe had a Medicine Man, who was sometimes a "wo"man and was respected leader of the tribe. They practiced medicine utilizing natural herbs, minerals, animals and the gods. For example, a mixture of cornmeal, fungus and herbs that was used as an elixir to cure boils and tumors, was the first Native American discovery of antibiotics.
Meet the brave warriors of modern medicine in the Lone Star state in Medicine Men: Heartwarming Tales of Texas Docs—their tales of miracles and words of inspiration are medicine for the soul.

A Heartwarming Texas Tale as Told by Doc White
Plastic surgery is one of the most fascinating and rewarding fields of medicine. The term "plastic" stems from the Greek word, plastikos, meaning "to mold" or "to shape."
Its scope encompasses the entire body—young and old, male and female, reconstructive and cosmetic. Extensive knowledge of the anatomy of the human body is required. The objective is to restore (or create) both form and function. The end result should both look good and work well. It is this special emphasis on "form," or appearance, which makes plastic surgery so special. It requires not only an understanding of form and function but also a sense of balance and proportion—in other words, an "artistic eye." But it is not enough to just know what looks good. The challenge of plastic surgery is to be able to envision the desired result and then be able to sculpt the body tissues to create it. If a plastic surgeon is an artist, then the human body is his canvas.
Dr. Steven J. White founded USA Plastic Surgery based on his commitment to excellence. He has dedicated his life to becoming the best that he can be. Known for his expertise in plastic and reconstructive surgery, Dr. White specializes in all aspects of cosmetic surgery of the face, breast and body. He believes in making a difference "One patient at a time." Personal attention is not a catchphrase—it is a practice philosophy. It is his focus on each individual that sets him apart.
There are no shortcuts to knowledge and experience. Dr. White is one of the few plastic surgeons in the United States certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery (ENT). This rare distinction is the result of many years of intensive study and training. His reputation for excellence has been recognized by his peers who selected him as a "Texas Super Doctor" in Texas Monthly as well as one of the "Best Doctors in Dallas" in D Magazine.
A perfectionist is one who constantly strives to improve. He is not happy until he knows he has done his best. Dr. Steven J. White is guided by a principle he learned at an early age: "If you are going to do something...do it right." This simple philosophy has served him well both academically and professionally throughout his life.
Raised on a ranch in Central Texas, he was influenced by both Texas and European culture. His interest in art stems from his European travel as a youth. Medicine was a natural career choice since it allowed him to pursue his love of science along with his desire to help others.
Dr. Steven J. White is known for his love of Texas and passion for surgery. He enjoys travel, tennis, skiing and scuba diving. An avid art collector, he also enjoys theater and opera. He has served on the Board of the Fort Worth Opera as well as the Board of the Texas Institute for Surgery at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas. Dr. White is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery as well as numerous other medical societies.
Patient safety and natural appearing results are Dr. White's primary goals. He operates in fully-accredited operating rooms and prefers to use doctors (anesthesiologists) to further enhance patient safety. Dr. White knows precise surgical technique is essential to achieve exceptional results. He does not like the "overdone, operated look." Instead, he prefers a more natural, artistic approach. Known for the quality of his results as well as the personal care he provides, Dr. White is committed to seeking the best outcome for every patient. This is the goal that he has set for himself as he seeks to make a difference in the lives of patients.
Combining innovative instruments and techniques with state-of-the-art technology allows Dr. White to offer his patients better results with less discomfort and rapid recovery. He is dedicated to developing less invasive techniques and designing improved instruments to allow his patients to achieve superior results.
Correcting distorted ears is one of the most rewarding procedures in plastic surgery. It can produce tremendous change in the patient's self-confidence and self-esteem. Dr. White believes that ear re-shaping, or otoplasty, should involve much more that simply "pinning the ears back." Using his intricate knowledge of ear anatomy and his artistic sense, he sculpts the ears into the desired shape and position. A combination of specific techniques allows him to create natural-appearing ears.
Nose re-shaping, or rhinoplasty, is often considered the most difficult operation in plastic surgery. A poor result from nasal surgery cannot be simply "covered up," since the nose is a focal point of the face. Perhaps this explains many surgeons' reluctance to perform rhinoplasty. Dr. White's dual background in plastic surgery and ear, nose and throat surgery (otolaryngology/ head and neck surgery) has provided him extensive experience in nasal surgery. Understanding the complex inter-relationships of surgical changes to the skin, bone and cartilages of the nose requires a thorough understanding of nasal anatomy and years of experience with nasal surgery. Frequently, Dr. White is asked to operate on patients who are not pleased with the results from one or more nasal operations. Dr. White's goals in rhinoplasty are not only to improve the patient's ability to breathe through the nose, but also to create a nose that appears natural and is in balance with the patient's other facial features.
"Turning back the clock" on the aging process through facial rejuvenation is becoming very popular as more people want to look as young as they feel. A combination of procedures is often indicated so an individualized approach is best. A well-trained surgeon with an artistic sense and a conservative approach is a must. It is for this reason that Dr. White chose to first become fully trained in head and neck surgery before proceeding with his plastic surgery training.
Dr. White's goal is to create long-lasting, natural results as inconspicuously as possible. Whether removing the excess skin and fat around the eyes (eyelid surgery), lifting the brows and smoothening the forehead wrinkles (brow lift), or sculpting the face and neck (face lift), facial rejuvenation can help patients both look and feel younger.
Almost all patients have some difference in the size or shape of one breast compared to the other. Dr. White listens carefully to gain an understanding of each patient's goals for surgery. He customizes each operation to the patient's unique anatomy. In addition to enhancing the shape of the breast, Dr. White also seeks to minimize scars and preserve sensation.
With breast augmentation, many patients express a desire for breasts that are larger and fuller, yet still appear natural—rather than the "stuck-on" appearance often seen on the cover of some magazines. Dr. White has developed customized instruments that allow him to operate through smaller incisions, which translate to smaller scars and improved outcomes. He often uses special sizers during the operation to further help determine the best size. This allows him to select the optimal implant to achieve the most naturally-shaped breast for that particular patient's body. During surgery, he uses cautery (rather than blunt dissection) to precisely dissect the tissues. This means less bleeding, bruising and swelling. Patients are therefore able to resume normal activities much sooner.
A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a procedure often performed to restore the youthful appearance to the breast after pregnancy or weight loss. Lifting the breast, elevating the nipple and decreasing the size of the areola creates this more youthful look. Breast reduction is a similar procedure except that the breast is also reduced n size. With both procedures, Dr. White takes great care to sculpt the breast into the most aesthetically pleasing shape. His closure techniques combined with his protocol for postoperative care help to minimize the scars and maintain the shape.
Breast reduction is also done for men to correct a condition known as gynecomastia, or male breast enlargement. It is very common, yet seldom discussed. Just as many women in our society are self-conscious about having small breasts, so too are many men about having enlarged breasts, or "male breasts." Surgery to treat gynecomastia is usually very rewarding. Dr. White has developed a treatment approach that leads to impressive results with minimal scars. He uses special liposuction instruments for smoother contours and greater fat and tissue removal so that direct excision of tissue is rarely necessary.
Body sculpting with liposuction has continued to grow in popularity in recent years, making it the most common cosmetic surgical procedure for both men and women. Dr. White uses specially-designed, custom-made cannulas to create a more natural look with less chance of unevenness. He also uses a tumescent (superwet) technique to minimize blood loss. This technique allows larger volumes of fat to be removed more safely. Recovery is faster and most patients are able to return to work after several days.
Traditional tummy tuck techniques may result in an "un-natural, operated look," particularly in the upper abdomen and around the umbilicus or belly button. Dr. White has perfected several techniques in order to obtain a more defined abdomen and a more natural umbilicus. These techniques take more time in surgery; however, Dr. White believes the final result is worth this extra effort. For most patients, a fine scar is well-hidden beneath the bikini line. A tummy tuck can produce a dramatic improvement in the abdomen by removing both the excess fat and skin and by tightening the abdominal muscles stretched by one or more pregnancies.

"Not all saints have halos, and not all angels have wings."
"Thank you so much for helping my wife and me the night of our accident. I had often wished that I could go back in time and prevent her injury. Thanks to you, it is almost as if I had. All that remains of that night are distant memories. Even soon after, the scars were faint, and now they are virtually non-existent. I am not an expert, but I doubt that there are many in your field capable of the quality of work, and the painstaking attention to detail that you demonstrated. I applaud you for the level of dedication you must have given your career to attain you level of skill.
I also want to thank you for the incredible amount of patience, understanding, and care you provided to my wife, my family, and me. You cannot imagine how much you helped my wife emotionally that night. In all my years, I have never seen a doctor so diligent about easing the emotional and mental trauma for everyone involved. I will be eternally grateful for everything you did for us."

Heartwarming Words from a few of Dr. White's Patients
"There is usually a silver lining to every cloud and, in my case, this is definitely true. Following a facial injury, I was led to Dr. White and his wonderful care. Six weeks after nasal reconstruction with a rib graft, my nose looks better than ever (Including a wonderful profile!)—and I can breathe! Dr. White has shown caring and concern both pre and post op. He never rushes through an office visit and takes time to explain everything. His expertise has been a blessing to me. I consider him to be one of the best doctors I have ever had!"
"You did an amazing job with my facelift and tummy tuck. It looks so natural that I forget I even had plastic surgery. I have been so pleased with my results—it is better than I could have ever expected! I looked for three years for a plastic surgeon and wasn't pleased with what I heard or saw—until I researched further and found you. Several people have asked me my opinion about plastic surgery, and if I would do it again. My answer, of course, is yes, yes, yes. It's been terrific!"
"I am so impressed with Dr. White. I would have never thought in a million years that someone could make my look like this! He has truly performed a miracle! Thank you Dr. White!"
"I can't believe how happy I've been with the results of my surgery. To think I was hesitant in the beginning to ever have any. When I finally had my tummy tuck and breast augmentation done at the same time, the results were fantastic! I feel confident again out of my clothing—like the feeling I had before having three children and before breast-feeding all three."
"To have a wonderful and very capable surgeon makes all the difference in the world. I would definitely recommend Dr. White ten thousand times over to all my patients as well. His meticulous attention to detail is outstanding!"
"I have battled a weight problem for most of my life. In November of 2001, I had gastric bypass surgery and then lost 100 pounds, leaving me feeling better than ever, but with excess skin around the belly and with droopy breasts. I had known Dr. White at my heaviest and I knew I only wanted him to do my tummy tuck and breast lift long before I ever had it done. As an ER physician, I often called Dr. White in to fix a laceration of the face or a badly damaged hand. He always gave his patients extra time and attention and I watched as he took added steps I didn't see other doctors do to insure the best results. I know a lot of plastic surgeons, but I knew I wanted the expertise of Dr. White for my surgery. He is a man of details and he believes in doing the job right—the first time. He and his staff always made me feel comfortable and never rushed.
Sometimes doctors have a hard time letting someone else be in charge, but I had complete confidence in Dr White. I did these procedures to feel better about myself and it has changed my life. I am now engaged to be married and am thrilled with my results!"
"Words can't even come close to describe how thrilled I am! Who would have thought a 62-year-old woman could look this good?
I feel like I have a whole new lease on life. Every time I see my new reflection in the mirror, I just smile all over. What a difference! I had forgotten how much fun shopping could be. I actually enjoy getting dressed again. I went from a size 14 to a size 10. It seems almost every day, someone I haven't seen in a while comes up to me and says "My goodness... Is that you? You look fantastic." I haven't looked this good in over 30 years!"
"I write for a living. Every day I seem to be able to find unique sentiments to describe how various firms serve their customers in meaningful ways. Rarely am I at a loss for words. When it comes to you, Dr. White, however—as I think back over my doctor/patient relationship over the last four years or so—I find myself filled with emotion. How do I sufficiently thank someone who has so positively impacted my life?
You've shown me that perfect plastic surgery requires the skill and patience of a sculptor. You've demonstrated that for you, both fine craftsmanship and the safety of your patients far outweigh any monetary gain you might derive from a procedure. You've helped me understand that having "MD" after your name isn't a title or a rank that makes you better than your patients. For you, it means nights, weekends, tirelessly reassuring those who fear, cheering someone who hurts, checking in when most would merely take off, and perfecting what others might think is "fine." I've found that your dedication is never-ending.
What leaves me without the right words, though, isn't any of these things. It's the contradiction in terms. You operate on the outside, but somehow you also transform what's beneath the surface. You routinely show your patients how much you care. You give of yourself 24 hours a day. You make each and every one of us feel like better people on the inside simply by association with you. The gift you give can't be assigned a value. And so, though I searched for something more meaningful, I'm back at two words that seem dismally inept. Thank you... "
"I am ecstatic with my results and what Dr. White has done to change my life! I went shopping today and after only five weeks, I am into a size four... from the size eight that I was wearing the day of my surgery!
Every time I look into the mirror I say a special thank you to the man that has given me the hourglass figure that I have always dreamed of, but never thought possible. There isn't enough paper or words to let this man know what he has done for me. I look better at 50 than I did at 25 and believe me, Dr. White, I am strutting my stuff! I love it, thank you!"
