Steven J. White MD

Steven J. White, M.D., founded USA Plastic Surgery based on his commitment to excellence. Known for his expertise in plastic and reconstructive surgery, he specialises in all aspects of cosmetic surgery of the face, breast, and body. His attention to detail, precise surgical technique, and exceptional results have led to his distinction as one of the world's best cosmetic plastic surgeons. "A perfectionist is one who constantly strives to improve. He is not happy until he knows he has done his best." Dr. Steven J. White is guided by a principle he learned at an early age: "If you are going to do something...do it right." This simple philosophy has served him well both academically and professionally throughout his life.

Raised on a ranch in Central Texas, he was influenced by both Texan and European culture. His interest in art stems from his European travel as a youth. Medicine was a natural career choice allowing him to pursue his love of science with his desire to help others. Known for his passion for surgery and love of Texas, Dr. White enjoys travel, tennis, skiing and scuba diving. He is an avid art collector whose collection encompasses numerous renowned artists and a variety of mediums. He also enjoys theater and opera and is privileged to serve on the Board of Fort Worth Opera.

Dr. White believes in making a difference "one patient at a time." Personal attention is not a catchphrase-is is a practice philosophy. It is his focus on each individual that further sets him apart. Patient safety and natural-appearing results are his primary goals. He knows precise surgical technique is essential to achieving exceptional results. He does not like the "overdone, operated look." Instead, he prefers a more natural, artistic approach. Dr. White is committed to seeking the best outcome for every patient. this is the goal that he has set for himself as he seeks to make a difference in the lives of his patients.

Credentials, Honors and Awards

Dr. White has distinguished himself among his peers at every level of his career. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Baylor University with Honors and later graduated Alpha Omega Alpha from Baylor College of Medicine with Honors. His interest in surgery grew from his fascination with human anatomy. Dr. White's surgical career was shaped by many highly acclaimed surgeons. While in Houston, he was honoured to have operated with and learned from two of the most famous surgeons o our time: Dr. Michael DeBakey and Dr. Denton Cooley. During his many years of surgical residency in two specialties, he was also fortunate to have trained under several world-renowned plastic surgeons.

There are no shortcuts to knowledge and experience. Dr. White is one of the few plastic surgeons in the United States certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology / Head and Neck Surgery (ENT). He dedicated 8 years to residency training (after medical school) in order to be fully trained in both specialties. His training in Otolaryngology was at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas. He then returned to Baylor College of Medicine in Houston for his residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Well regarded for his teaching ability, Dr. White has given numerous lectures on plastic surgery. In addition to teaching anatomy to medical students, he has served as Clinical Instructor of plastic surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. Currently, Dr. White is an attending surgeon at several of Dallas' finest hospitals.

He is one of the founders of the Texas Institute for Surgery at Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas, where he serves as Chairman of the Board. He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, as well as numerous other medical societies. His reputation for excellence has been recognised by his peers and his frequent contributions to the media.

Attention to detail distinguishes the exceptional from the ordinary.

Facial Surgery

Otoplasty

Correcting prominent ears (or a distorted ear) is one of the most rewarding procedures in plastic surgery, resulting in a tremendous change in the patient's self-confidence and self-esteem. Dr. White believes that ear re-shaping, or otoplasty, should involve much more than simply "pinning the ears back." With an intricate knowledge of ear anatomy and his artistic ability, he sculpts the ears into the desired shape and position. His combination of specific techniques allows him to create natural-appearing ears.

Facial Rejuvenation

"Turning back the clock" on the ageing process through facial rejuvenation is now more popular than ever. Whether removing the excess skin and fat around the eyes (eyelid surgery), lifting the brow and smoothing the forehead wrinkles (brow lift), or sculpting the face and neck (face lift), facial rejuvenation helps patients both look and feel younger.

A combination of procedures is often indicated so an individualised approach is best. A well-trained surgeon with an artistic sense and a conservative approach is a must. Attention to detail is especially important in facial surgery due to the complicated anatomy. It is for this reason that Dr. White first devoted six years to becoming fully trained in head and neck surgery before proceeding with his plastic surgery training. His approach is to create long-lasting, natural results as inconspicuously as possible.

Nasal Surgery

Nose re-shaping, or rhinoplasty, is often considered the most difficult operation in plastic surgery. A poor result cannot be simply "covered up," since the nose is a focal point of the face. Perhaps this explains many surgeons' reluctance to perform rhinoplasty. Dr. White's dual background in plastic surgery and ear, nose, and throat surgery (otolaryngology) has provided him with extensive experience in nasal surgery. Understanding the complex inter-relationships of surgical changes to the skin, bone and cartilages of the nose requires a thorough understanding of nasal anatomy and years of experience with nasal surgery. Frequently, he is asked to operate on patients who are not pleased with the results from other surgeons after one or more nasal operations.

Dr. White's goals in rhinoplasty are not only to create a nose that appears natural and in balance with the patient's other facial features, but also to improve the patient's ability to breathe through the nose. He frequently performs septoplasty and turbinoplasty to improve the airway and breathing by straightening the nasal septum and making the turbinates smaller. Turbinoplasty has the added benefit of improving or alleviating nasal allergies.

Dr. White has gone above and beyond all my expectations for a cosmetic surgeon. I really cannot even believe the results. I feel truly beautiful for the very first time in my life!
A bad face lift is obvious to all. A good face lift is known to one, but admired by many.

Breast Enhancement by Steven J. White, M.D.

Breast Lift and Breast Reduction

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is performed to restore the youthful appearance of the breast after pregnancy or weight loss. Lifting the breast, elevating the nipple, and decreasing the size of the areola create this more youthful look. Breast reduction is a similar procedure except that the breast is also reduced in size. With both procedures, Dr. White takes great care to sculpt the breast into the most aesthetically pleasing shape. His closure techniques together with his particular postoperative care instructions help to maintain the shape and minimize scars.

Breast Augmentation

Dr. Steven J. White offers the latest advance in breast implants: the "Optimized, Rapid Recovery" Breast Augmentation, the culmination of over a decade of experience which allows him to optimise every aspect of the procedure. His goal is to create the most beautiful breasts for each patient. The operation seems deceptively simple-making the breasts bigger by putting in implants. Achieving exceptional results, however, requires detailed pre-op planning, precise surgical technique, and careful follow-up. Dr. White's "Optimized, Rapid Recovery" Breast Augmentation does just that...in a series of 7 steps.
Step 1 involves listening carefully to understand what the patient is hoping to achieve.
Step 2 entails taking several measurements of the breasts and chest, paying close attention to asymmetries, which are surprisingly common. Selecting the proper size implants is one of the most important aspects of the surgery. Dr. White believes this is best achieved by matching the implant to the patient's tissues and chest wall and then adjusting the size according to the patient's desire.
Step 3 is comprehensive education. Every patient is thoroughly informed about the procedure and what to expect. The next three steps occur during surgery.
Step 4 involves precise surgical dissection (not blunt dissection) to create the "pocket" under the muscle for the implant. Dr. White's specially designed instruments allow him to use the smallest incision to minimise the scar.
Step 5 is when he uses "sizers" to carefully match the implant to the patient's tissues to create the most natural look for each patient.
Step 6 is to sculpt or shape the breast tissue (when needed) to achieve the prettiest breasts.
Step 7 is the follow-up care. Dr. White has developed a comprehensive post-op program for rapid recovery and exceptional results. His precise surgical technique avoids bruising and minimises pain so his patients can enjoy a quick recovery. They begin range-of-motion arm exercises on the day of surgery. Many patients feel so good they go shopping or out to lunch the next day.

Dr. White is so incredibly passionate about what he does and it shows in his results. I can describe the outcome of my surgery in one word: perfection!
My goal is to produce results so natural that people will think as she walks by: She looks great... Did she or didn't she?

Beyond Black

Body Contouring

Liposuction

Body Sculpting with liposuction has continued to grow in popularity for both men and women. Dr. White believes that success in liposuction is determined by three factors: the amount of fat removed, the improvement in overall body shape and contour, and the smoothness of the skin after liposuction. He optimises each aspect using his advanced Circumferential Micro-Lipo Technique. His specially designed, custom-made cannulas (hollow instruments for fat suction) allow him to create a more natural look with less chance of unevenness. The circumferential approach allows for even greater fat removal and better body sculpting while using his very small diameter cannulas for smoother contours. A tumescent (superwet) technique is used to minimize blood loss and allow larger volumes of fat to be removed more safely. Recovery is faster and most patients are able to return to work after several days.

Male breast reduction

Breast reduction for men is performed to correct a condition known as gynecomastia, or male breast enlargement. It is very common, yet seldom discussed. Just as many women in our society are self-conscious about having small breasts, so too are many men concerned about having enlarged breasts. Dr. White has developed a technique to treat gynecomastia that leads to impressive results with fewer, less noticeable scars. He uses special liposuction instruments for greater fat and tissue removal so that direct excision of tissue is rarely necessary. Many men choose to add liposuction of the torso as well to diminish the abdomen and love handles for an even greater physique.

Tummy Tuck

Dramatic results can be achieved with a tummy tuck since it narrows the waist, tightens the tummy, and removes excess skin and fat. As an added bonus, any stretch marks or unsightly scars below the navel are typically removed at the same time. Although the traditional tummy tuck procedure often results in an "unnatural, operated look," particularly in the upper abdomen and around the umbilicus (or belly button), Dr. White has perfected several techniques in order to obtain a more sculpted abdomen and a more natural-looking belly button. This takes more time in surgery; however he believes the final result is worth this extra effort. For most patients, a fine scar is well hidden beneath the bikini line. Due to his refined techniques and his special postop protocol, most patients enjoy a quick recovery and are usually only taking Tylenol for discomfort for just two days after surgery. Combining a tummy tuck with liposuction or a breast enhancement procedure can lead to even more outstanding results.

Every time I look in the mirror I say a special thank you to the man that has given me the hourglass figure that I have always dreamed of--but never thought possible. I look better at 50 than I did at 25. I love it, thank you Dr. White!
A tummy tuck--done well--is a fabulous operation. Patients are often amazed by the results. They usually drop two or more dress sizes and can't wait to wear a bikini again.

Conclusion

Expert advice, personal concern, and trusted experience... these are the hallmarks of Dr. Steven J. White and USA Plastic Surgery. By using innovative techniques, state-of-the-art technology, and specialised instruments, Dr. White is able to offer his patients beautiful results with less discomfort and rapid recovery.
He believes the most important factor in choosing a plastic surgeon is the quality of their results. Credentials, education, training, and experience are very, very important. But it takes more than credentials to achieve natural results - attention to detail and artistic judgment are also critical. Dr. White knows that performance counts - both in the operating room as well as after surgery. He is well-known for his commitment to excellence as well as his outstanding patient care. Steven J. White, MD on Beauty

Beauty is a look that pleases the eye. It captures our attention, draws us in, and creates an irresistible urge to gaze and stare. Looking at beauty brings joy. It makes us happy.

It can take many forms.... Art. Nature. People. Almost anything.

Beauty, like art, can speak to each of us in different ways. It is indeed in the eye of the beholder. And yet true beauty is that rare and special quality that we all admire. Its appeal is universal and undeniable.

A beautiful person is someone blessed with the combination of features that come together to form a look that we admire. It is balance and proportion artistically expressed in the human form. Although each individual feature may not be perfect, the collective effect is indeed beautiful.

Beauty is a quality we long for. It is our desire, our wish, our goal. It is that which we seek and strive to obtain. It drives us to want to look our best. Looking good makes us feel better about ourselves.

This is the essence of plastic surgery - to bring joy to the individual by enhancing their beauty. Seeing how a small change on the outside can lead to big change on the inside is the true reward for a plastic surgeon.

The most beautiful woman.

Andie MacDowell personifies beauty, style and elegance. She has a beautiful face a gorgeous smile, radiant eyes, and a knock-out figure. She has curves in all the right places. But yet her beauty transcends her appearance. She exudes warmth and charm. She is genuine, sophisticated, and immensely talented. Even her voice is distinctly beautiful and unique. She is glamorous and yet down to earth. She has that special quality that sets her apart. A timeless modern beauty. Captivating, engaging, and truly beautiful.

The goal of plastic surgery is to safely create long-lasting changes which appear natural, not 'over-done.' The surgeon's focus should be to take the time necessary to optimise each procedure. Patient safety and the quality of the final result should be the guiding principles for every operation.

Playground taunts of 'Dumbo' got you down? Get your ears done

Steven J. White, M.D., performed otoplasty at Texas Institute for Surgery at PHD

Jason Ludowese knew there was something different about him when he looked in the mirror. His left ear stuck out noticeably farther than his right ear.

Jason's left ear "just stuck straight out to the side,"
says LaVonda Reed, Jason's mother.

"I didn’t really want it fixed," says Jason, a cheerful 11-year-old. That is, until one rainy day after school, when some older boys walking down the hall hurled a few insults his way.

"Dumbador!" they shouted. "Elephant ears!"

"He also said, 'You can get radio signals with that ear,'" Jason recalls of one tormentor. That year, he underwent surgery to correct the problem.

Prominent ears, or prominauris as it's known in the plastic surgery community, can mean heartache for many children and their parents. It's an abnormality that, for some, can even warrant going under the knife.

In 2007, otology, or cosmetic ear surgery, was the leading plastic surgery procedure for children under 18, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Until recently, nose jobs, or rhinoplasty, had been the procedure of choice for young people for more than a decade, with the exception of a brief surge in otoplasty in 2002.

Post-surgery, Jason Ludowese doesn't feel much
different, but says his ears look much better.

To the horror of some, elective cosmetic surgery can be performed as young as 5 years old, which is when the ears are 80 percent fully grown and children become eligible for otoplasty.

Though some may consider the procedure frivolous, the risks are not. They include bleeding, infection and the dangers of general anesthesia for small children, not to mention unsatisfactory outcomes. Some doctors are also skeptical about a child's ability to understand the procedure.

"A child has limitations," says Dr. Paul Horowitz, a pediatrician and fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, who worries about situations in which "the parent is giving informed consent on behalf of the child, but the child grows up and says, 'Gee, I didn't really want that done. I would have been fine having my natural ears.'"

The subject has at times become fodder for rancor on parenting sites and message boards. When a parent on UrbanBaby.com posted a comment about getting a 4-year-old son's ears fixed, for fear he might be the target of ridicule later in life, an appalled parent replied, "you're joking right?" before pointing out that going ahead with the procedure would send a message to the son that something was wrong with him.

Some parents, though, just don't want to take any chances.

"In a perfect world, you raise your kids to have such strong self-esteem that they don't have eating disorders, they don’t do drugs," says Jennifer Buckley, a dermatologist from Atlanta, whose 6-year-old son had otoplasty. "That's in a perfect world."

Having the procedure done early on, particularly before school age, means children could avoid any potential teasing, says Dr. Matthew Schulman, assistant professor of plastic surgery at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

While the eyes may be the windows to one's soul, the ears, for the most part, sit unnoticed on the periphery unless they stick out like a sore, well, ear. Doctors typically identify a prominent ear as one whose rim is more than 15 millimeters away from the side of the head, or the width of a finger. Prominent ears can elicit cruel grade-school name calling, turning lovable cartoon characters such as Dumbo, Mickey Mouse, and Bugs Bunny into mean-spirited affronts.

Doug Monk was the brunt of such taunts throughout his childhood.

"Monkey is real close to Monk," says the 51-year-old construction worker from Monticello, Iowa. In kindergarten, a precocious classmate with a knack for homophones realized the coincidence, and the nickname stuck throughout Monk's childhood. While girls can hide their ears with long hair, Monk's mother always gave him a close-cropped haircut, which made things worse.

When he was 12, Monk's parents drove him to the idyllic-sounding town of Strawberry Point for summer camp. "I was only there for a week," he says. "I was trying to blend in and be cool. But soon enough, a fellow female camper "made some comment about my monkey ears."

"When you're that age, you're just starting to notice the opposite sex, so that really got me," Monk says. Unable to afford otoplasty, he never underwent the surgery.

Today, it remains a pricey procedure. In 2007 the average otoplasty surgery cost $3,085. The procedure is rarely covered by health insurance, as most companies consider it to be a cosmetic fix.

Some plastic surgeons argue that otoplasty is a quality-of-life procedure.

"People who get it are not looking to stand out or look like a model; they just want to fit in," says Dr. Frederick Lukash, an assistant clinical professor of surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine who has written a position paper on teenage plastic surgery. A 1992 article in the British Journal of Plastic Surgery showed that prominent ear correction relieved psychosocial distress in 90 percent of the children it studied.

Playground taunts aren't the only concern for people with protruding ears. "We knew how society worked," says Jason's mother, LaVonda Reed, of Allen, Texas. She didn't want Jason's ears interfering with his dating life or getting a job. People with big ears, she says, face a greater stigma even in the adult world. "You think of them as dumb," Reed says.

Dr. Steven J. White, who performed Jason's surgery, agrees.

"The societal impression is that big ears are bad, and they're abnormal, and you just stand out because you look different than everyone else," White says.

"Noses," on the other hand, "have a lot of variation," he added.

Now, two years later, Jason has a matching set of ears.

As for Doug Monk, he says he's learned, like many others, to live with his ears. "It got to the point where it didn't bother me anymore," he says, acknowledging that this didn't happen until he was 35.

Though he'd tell others who can afford the surgery to "go for it," Monk says he's happy now the way he is.

"My wife thinks they’re beautiful," he says of his ears. "She was homecoming queen, and if she thinks they're cool, then really I don't care."

EXPERT ADVICE

By Katie McNew

Before you opt for plastic surgery, consider these words from three of Dallas' top plastic surgeons.

Find out where the surgery is going to be performed.

Be certain that your doctor is a board certified member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Ask who will be doing the anesthesia.

With such similarities, choosing between an anesthetist and an anesthesiologist may seem trivial, but it is the difference between having a nurse or a doctor put you under", says Steven J. White, M.D., of USA Plastic Surgery. When dealing with your health, in whose hands would you rather be?

Discuss your goals and expectations.

Carefully review before-and-afters.

Because the magic of Photoshop can cast doubt on almost any image, study the pictures. Says Dr. White, "Ask yourself 'Are they consistent? Do they show multiple views of each patient before and after? Are the pictures taken from the same perspective in the same condition [i.e., with the same lighting]?'" This is also a good opportunity to assess whether or not you like the style of the surgeons work, adds Dr. Brassichis.

FACE

Cosmetic eyelid surgery, blepharoplasty, can improve the appearance of the eyelids, restoring firmness to the area surrounding the eyes to achieve a more rested and rejuvenated appearance. Blepharoplasty can correct loose or sagging skin of the upper eyelid, as well as excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness, bags under the eyes, droopiness of the lower eyelids, excess skin, and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelids.

Injectable fillers such as Restylane, Perlane, collagen, Juvederm, Sculptra, Hylaform, Artefill, Radiesse, and fat transfer are quick, non-invasive ways to rejuvenate your appearance. Injectables can plump thin lips, enhance shallow contours, soften facial creases and wrinkles, and improve the appearance of recessed scars. A pharmaceutical filler substance of your own fat is injected below the skin surface to fill hollow areas and the creases, or plump the lips and back of the hands.

Botox is a non-surgical, injectable, physician-administered aesthetic treatment for moderate to severe frown lines. It works by reducing the contractions of the muscles that cause those persistent frown lines that have developed over time. In most cases , it is a simple, 10-minute process. Within just days after the injection, you'll see noticeable improvement in the moderate to severe frown lines between the brows that can last up to four months.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Steven J. White with USA Plastic Surgery calls Botox "magic in a bottle." He has perfected his approach over time so that is quick, easy, and virtually painless. He uses very small amounts of a more concentrated Botox, which he carefully injects in selected muscles to relax them. With his understanding of facial anatomy from his advanced training in ENT and plastic surgery, he knows exactly which muscles to target to minimize to minimize the chance of paralyzing the wrong muscles, which could cause a droopy eyelid or an abnormal smile. Dr. White does all the injections himself (rather than delegating them to a nurse) so that he can be sure he targets the right muscles to get the best results. "One of the best things about Botox is that you can not only is that you can not only erase wrinkles once they appear, but you can actually prevent wrinkles from appearing if you start early enough before they form permanent creases in the skin," Dr. White says. "For most patients, this occurs in the 30s or late 20s and becomes more evident by the time they reach 40 or 50."

Rhinoplasty. The "nose job" as it is often called, can reduce or increase the size of the nose, change the shape of its tip or bridge, narrow the span of the nostrils, or change the angle between the nose and the upper lip. During the surgery the skin of the nose is separated from it’s supporting of bone and cartilage, which is then sculpted to the desired shape before the skin is re-draped over the new framework. Procedures have improved in recent years, allowing surgeons to reshape the actual structure of the nose without removing the cartilage at the expense of its support. Nasal surgery can also benefit those who suffer from severe allergies and breathing difficulties. Rhinoplasty is generally considered to be the most difficult operation in plastic surgery. Dr. White says sculpting the nose is a 'game of millimeters’, which requires precise techniques, and thorough understanding of the complicated anatomy. "The goal of rhinoplasty is to reshape the nose to achieve a look that appears natural and in balance with the patient's other facial features," he says. "Careful attention should be taken to avoid over-resection causing a pinched, collapsed, or 'done' look, which are the most common reasons patients are referred to me for rhinoplasty."

Facelift. Still considered the most effective way of turning back the clock, a facelift can improve the visible signs of aging in the face and neck, such as sagging in the midface, deep creases below the lower eyelids and between the nose and mouth, loss of muscle tone in the lower face that may create jowls, and loose skin and excess fatty deposits under the chin and jaw. The facelift provides a more youthful, rested appearance with uplifted contours and improved tone in facial skin.

it's important to know that not all facelifts are the same. The SMAS muscle layer is the deeper layer to which the skin is attached. By tightening the SMAS layer, the facelift looks more natural and the result will last longer. This produces a harmonious and natural appearance. Swelling and bruising from a facelift should subside within two or four weeks. Final results may be apparent in up to two months.

BODY

Breast augmentation involves using implants to fulfill a patient's desire for fuller breasts or to restore breast volume lost after weight reduction or pregnancy. Placement of implants beneath the chest wall muscle or directly behind breast tissue using pre-filled implants or implants filled during surgery creates the desired volume. Dr. White with USA Plastic Surgery offers the latest advance in breast augmentation with the "Optimized, Rapid Recovery" Breast Augmentation. He developed this seven-step program over the course of a decade to optimize every step of the process while focusing on rapid-recovery. He specializes in achieving results, which appear natural without the "stuck-on" look. By using specialized instruments and precise techniques to avoid bruising and minimize pain, his patients enjoy a remarkably quick and easy recovery. Typically, they have no bruising at all and are only taking Tylenol for pain on the day after the surgery. According to Dr. White, the two most important factors in breast augmentation involve first, how the pocket is made under the muscle for the implant, and second, how the surgeon matches the implant to the patient's body and their desired breast size.

"Now that women have the choice of saline or silicone, breast augmentation has once again become extremely popular in Dallas," Dr. White says, "Patient education is very important. Spending time with the patient during the during the consultation prior to surgery is critical so that the surgeon can understand what the patient hopes to achieve and can educate the patient about her choices and teaching them what to expect."

Liposuction slims and reshapes specific areas of the body by removing excess fat deposits, improving your body contours and proportion, and ultimately enhancing your self-image. Body sculpting with liposuction has continued to grow in popularity in recent years, making it the most common cosmetic surgical procedure for both men and women. Success in liposuction is mainly determined by the amount of fat removed, the smoothness of the skin overlying the area after liposuction., and the improvement in overall body shape and contour.

Dr. White's frequently performs circumferential body liposuction for greater fat removal and therefore better body sculpting while using very small diameter cannulas (hollow instruments for fat suction) for smoother contours. Specially designed, custom-made cannulas allow him to create a more natural look with less chance of unevenness. A tumescent (superwet) technique is also used to minimize blood loss and allow larger volumes of fat to be removed more safely, Recovery is faster and most patients are able to return to work after several days.

Tummy tuck. Also known as abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck involves the surgical removal of excess abdominal fat and skin and includes tightening of the abdominal wall where the muscles have weakened. A full tummy tuck requires a horizontal incision in the area below the pubic hairline. Incision size is largely dependent on the amount of excess skin to be removed. Where correction is isolated to the area below the navel, a limited or mini tummy tuck with a shorter incision at the pubic bone may be recommended. "A tummy tuck is a fantastic operation - when it is done well," says Dr. White. "Spectacular results may be achieved with beautifully sculpted tummies, natural navels, and fine-line scars that can be well hidden by a bikini. Most patients are excited to discover that they drop at least 2 dress sizes after surgery. Extraordinary results require specialized techniques as well as a commitment by the surgeon to take the time necessary to get the very best result for every patient."

Dr. White stresses the importance of surgeons carefully screening patients for underlying medical conditions that may affect their surgery. For added safety he prefers to operate in an accredited operating room on the hospital campus with a doctor (anesthesiologist) - not a nurse (CRNA) - doing the anesthesia. "Special effort should be taken to predict and prevent potential complications," he says. "Comprehensive patient education is essential so patients will know what to expect at every step of the process."

"Careful attention should be taken to avoid over-resection causing a pinched, collapsed, or 'done' look, which are the most common reasons patients are referred to me for rhinoplasty."

Otoplasty/Ear surgery. Otoplasty, or ear reshaping is often referred to as simply 'pinning the ears back.' However, it should involve so much more to achieve the most natural appearing ears. Dr. White believes otoplasty is one of the most artistic of all plastic surgery procedures. He uses a series of specific techniques to re-shape the ears to avoid sharp ridges and re-position them to achieve the most natural look. "It's amazing what a difference it can make in a person's appearance and self-esteem," he says.

Prominent ears are very common, affecting approximately one in every 700 people. However, they are usually hidden by half the population since most women with prominent ears learn at an early age how to style their hair to cover their ears. This is why most otoplasty patients are men since they have very few options to hide their ears. Otoplasty can be a challenging procedure for the surgeon, yet it is a remarkably easy recovery for the patient as it's virtually painless and the stitches are dissolvable. "The best part is that the results are immediate," Dr. White says. "Seeing the change in how the patients feel about themselves after the surgery is truly incredible."

Facelift and Necklift. Still considered the most effective way of turning back the clock, a facelift can improve visible signs of aging in the face and neck, such as sagging in the midface, deep creases below the lower eyelids and between the nose and mouth, loss of muscle tone in the lower face that may create jowls, and loose skin and excess fatty deposits under the chin and jaw. The facelift provides a more youthful, rested appearance with uplifted contours and improved tone in facial skin. Improved facelift techniques have resulted in less bruising, swelling, and downtime for patients. For the most part, the techniques involve how the surgeon structures the skin and muscles. Also, scars can be hidden in the hair line behind the ears.

Male Breast Reduction. Male breast enlargement, or gynecomastia, is surprisingly common, yet rarely discussed. Fortunately, most cases respond well to liposuction which removes excess fat and glandular tissue to improve their chest contour.

Dr. White has developed specialized instruments and techniques for liposuction of the male breast, which allow him to produce impressive results. He considers cosmetic surgery for gynecomastia as one of the most rewarding procedures for men because of the big impact it can have on a man's self-esteem and self-confidence.

Plastic Surgery

For Dr. Steven J. White of USA Plastic Surgery, patient safety and a commitment to excellence are the foundations of his practice. He is one of the few plastic surgeons in the United States certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology (ENT).

"I specialize in all aspects of cosmetic surgery of the face, breast, and body," Dr. White says. "My primary focus is on patient safety and natural appearing results."

In order to achieve exceptional results, Dr. White performs precision surgery. Although it may take longer to perform, precision surgery benefits patients in many ways.

"I believe precision surgery is well worth the extra effort to achieve more natural results with less pain, less bruising, and a faster recovery," Dr. White says. "Since there is usually very little blood loss with precision surgery, patients also feel better sooner and are therefore able to return to work much more quickly."

A commitment to refining his techniques has led Dr. White to perfect innovative procedures for all areas of the body. His most popular is the "Optimized, Rapid Recovery" Breast Augmentation, a seven-step process that optimizes every step with a special emphasis on matching the implant to the patient's tissues and wishes in order to achieve the best size for each individual patient. The procedure can be performed with saline or silicone gel implants.

Another popular procedure is the "Mommy Makeover". Amazing results can be seen by combining a tummy tuck with either liposuction of the thighs or breast enhancement, such as a breast lift or breast augmentation (implants). Dr. White has also seen an increase in requests for rhinoplasty to re-shape the nose and improve breathing.

"Many years of experience as an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) surgeon and as a plastic surgeon have allowed me to create much better results in nasal surgery," Dr. White says. "Patients are more informed today so they often seek me to perform their nasal surgery since I am board certified in both plastic surgery and otolaryngology. Although rhinoplasty is often considered the most difficult operation in plastic surgery, I believe it is also one of the most artistic and rewarding procedures to perform."

Dr. White feels that this season is an excellent time to start thinking about cosmetic enhancing.

"Spring is always one of the busiest times of the year for us, as patients want to look their best for fun in the sun," Dr. White says. "Breast augmentations, liposuction, tummy tucks, and breast lifts are especially popular now. I've discovered that it's the "girlfriend network" that keeps me so busy. Patients frequently come in and say "I'll have what she's having."

When choosing a plastic surgeon, Dr. White recommends assessing credentials, dedication to safety, and quality of both results and patient care.

When selecting a surgeon, Dr. White recommends following these three steps:

1. Ask about credentials:

Are you board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?

Do you have privileges to perform my requested procedure in a hospital? If so, which one?

2. Ensure safety:

Who will be doing my anesthesia-a doctor (MD) or a nurse (CRNA)?

Where will my surgery be performed-in an accredited operating room on the hospital campus or somewhere else?

3. See quality:

What is the quality of the surgeon's results? Do they look natural?

What do the photos look like? Are they consistent? High quality?

What type of care do patients receive before and after surgery?

The 2008 Cosmetic Surgery Reference Guide

by Jennifer Sanders Hayes

In the never-ending quest for youth and beauty, the line between "did she or didn't she" is becoming less distinguishable. Face lifts, liposuction, and breast augmentation remain in high demand. However, the "done look" once associated with these surgeries is old news, thanks to the latest cosmetic surgery tools and techniques that create softer, more natural-looking features. Then there are the quick, non-invasive procedures that also leave people guessing. Yesterday, your friend had noticeable crow's feet; today they're gone. And just how did your colorist get her waist back in the short time it took for your roots to start showing again?

The answers can be found in your cosmetic surgeon's office. Whether you're ready to shave years off your appearance with major cosmetic surgery or just want to return from lunch with a more refreshed look, your options are as endless as the time you spend worrying about your appearance. You're certainly not alone in your quest for youth and beauty, as more than 11 million surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures were performed in the U.S. alone last year with an attached price tag of about $12 billion.

Just in time for swimsuit season, the 2008 Cosmetic Surgery Reference Guide helps you navigate your way through the overwhelming maze of today's latest cosmetic surgery options. Here you'll get the latest information on how to safely pursue cosmetic surgery, what's new in cosmetic dentistry, "mommy makeover" ideas, and how to look younger, faster. Any procedure you want will require an initial consultation with your doctor, but this guide gives you a head start with insider information straight from Dallas' most sought-after cosmetic doctors. Lucky you.

Finding Dr. Right

Once you determine what kind of cosmetic surgery procedure you want, you need to choose a surgeon to perform it. Knowing where to go and what to ask is the most important step in achieving optimal results.

As with any surgery, safety is critical, which is why it's important to select a qualified, board-certified, and experienced cosmetic surgeon. Thorough research on cosmetic procedures and surgical methods is important. Avoid discount procedures and surgeons who over-promise specific results.

While most cosmetic procedures are not medically necessary, cosmetic surgery is still just that - surgery. Cosmetic surgery can be done safely if the proper precautions are taken. For instance, Dr. Steven J. White with USA Plastic Surgery carefully screens patients for underlying medical conditions that may affect their surgery and seeks pre-op clearance from various specialists as needed prior to surgery. For added safety, he prefers to operate in an accredited operating room on the hospital campus with a doctor (anesthesiologist)-not a nurse (CRNA)-administering anesthesia.

"Yes, this obviously costs somewhat more, but what value do you place on your safety? he asks. "Patient safety and the quality of the final result should be guiding principles for every operation."

Finding "Dr. Right" requires significant effort on the patient's part, primarily in researching the desired procedures and checking the credentials, experience, and reputation of the surgeon.

Choosing a Surgeon

Is the surgeon certified by a board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (www.abms.org)? The American Board of Plastic Surgery (www.abplsurg.org) is the only board recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties to certify doctors as plastic surgeons. Does the surgeon have hospital privileges to perform the procedure you are considering? Before a hospital will allow a surgeon to perform surgery, the hospital must investigate the surgeon's training and competency to perform each procedure the surgeon does. Does the surgeon perform surgery in an accredited facility? Cosmetic surgery can be safely performed in an accredited hospital, surgery center, or office-based surgical facility.

Ask friends and family you trust for suggestions, but always check to see if the surgeon is board certified.

What to Expect at the Consultation

The consultation is an opportunity for the surgeon to determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure you are considering and to explain the benefits and risk of the surgery. This should include a review of your medical history and any existing medical conditions.

You should be able to openly discuss your goals, and the surgeon should convey realistic expectations for the results of the procedure you are considering.

The care after surgery should be discussed, including recovery time, time off work, need for help at home, and follow-up visits.

The surgeon's office staff should welcome questions about the surgeon's experience, the procedures, and care after surgery. Also, the appropriate office staff should clearly explain the cost and payment policies prior to surgery.

The Mommy Makeover

If your eyes weny straight to "mommy makeover," chances are you are one of the millions of new moms looking for a way to reclaim your pre-baby shape. Even after the pregnancy weight is gone, the changes in a woman's body can be drastic. Clothes don't fit the way they once did and the thought of putting on a swimsuit can be more than a new mom can bear. Enter the "mommy makeover", or "post-partum perk up" – the solution to getting you back to your skin-baring self in not time.

"Pregnancy can wreak havoc on a woman's body with sudden weight gain, engorged breasts, and a stretched tummy," says Dr. Steven White with USA Plastic Surgery. "Unfortunately, the body doesn't always rebound to its pre-pregnancy state, especially after several children. Many moms struggle with deflated and/or drooping breasts, loose skin and muscles on the belly, and added weight on the legs and torso despite vigorous exercise and a healthy diet."

Dr. White has developed specialized techniques and protocols for both breast enhancement and body contouring which combine to produce amazing results. "The 'girlfriend network' has kept me busy," Dr. White says. "Moms come from all over once they see their friends' incredible transformations."

Of course, no two mommy makeovers are alike, which is why Dr. White offers two primary cosmetic surgery solutions- "tummy and above" or the "tummy and below."

Sometimes his patients want both. In these cases, depending on the individual, he often elects to divide the surgery into two stages. The "tummy and above" involves a tummy tuck and breast enhancement, usually a breast augmentation or breast lift. The "tummy and below" combines a tummy tuck with liposuction of the thighs and knees.

Dr. White has dedicated the past decade to refining his breast enhancement and body contouring techniques by perfecting his breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, and liposuction procedures. Exceptional results stem from his attention to detail and precise surgical technique as well as his emphasis on patient safety and efforts to prevent complications.

According to Dr. White, many women have a misconception that a tummy tuck is a very painful procedure that requires an extended leave of absence from work. A patient's pain and recovery time depend on two things - how the procedure is performed and how the patient is cared for after surgery. Most of Dr. White's patients are back at work in just seven to 10 days and report little to no discomfort after only two days.

"A tummy tuck is not a sign of defeat," Dr. White says. "If the elasticity of the tissues has been exceeded, then no amount of exercise can bring it back. One of my patients was a fitness instructor who taught 18 hours a week of Yoga and Pilates, and even she couldn't get her tummy muscles to rebound from several pregnancies until her tummy tuck."

The Successful Mommy Makeover

Wait at least six months after delivery for a tummy tuck.

Wait at least six months after finishing breastfeeding for breast enhancement.

Try to be at a stable, healthy weight before having cosmetic surgery as a tummy tuck isn't designed to be a weight loss procedure.

Cosmetic Surgery Update: Breast Augmentation

There's a lot more to breast augmentation than settling on a cup size. New surgery techniques and advanced implants have made this popular form of plastic surgery safer, with faster recovery times and more desirable outcomes.

The good news about breast augmentation doesn't end there, as the FDA recently approved use of a third generation of silicone implants. The introduction of a new and improved version provides women with two safe implant choices, saline or silicone gel. Deciding which type of implant is right for you requires research, thoughtful consideration, and ample time discussing the pros and cons of each with a qualified plastic surgeon.

Dr. Steven J. White, a plastic surgeon with USA Plastic Surgery, guides each of his patients through his own unique seven-step program for breast implants, "Optimized Rapid Recovery" Breast Augmentation. Part of this comprehensive step-by-step education process is deciding between saline and silicone. Both have an outer shell made of solid silicone. The difference is in what the implant is filled with-saline or silicone gel.

If you are considering breast augmentation, Dr. White recommends considering the pros and cons of each type of implant so that you are well-informed before you visit with a plastic surgeon.

Hot Mamas
by Dawn McMullan

When diet and exercise didn't do the trick, three Dallas moms chose plastic surgery to get back their pre-baby bodies. Now they look better than ever.

Dr. Steven J. White calls this the "postpartum perk-up" or the "mommy makeover."

Tummy tuck. Breast implants and/or a lift. Liposuction around the thighs and hips. All the procedures that get rid of the stuff those sweet little bundles of joy leave behind on their way out.

Local plastic surgeons have seen a significant increase in women having post-baby procedures in the last five years. Breast augmentation was the top surgical cosmetic procedure for women last year for the first time, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Liposuction was second; abdominoplasty (or tummy tuck) was fourth.

But if we work hard enough, can't we get rid of the baby fat? Not necessarily. Some women accept the changes in their bodies as a rite of passage into motherhood. These days, though, more moms are choosing surgery instead.

"It's not a sign of defeat to have a tummy tuck," says Dr. White, who does more of them than anything else at his practice, USA Plastic Surgery in Dallas. "One of my patients weighted 110 and taught Pilates and yoga. Loose skin won't go away. Muscles will only tighten so much."

A friend of DR. White's once used a bag of balloons to describe it. She laid one on the counter, never blown up. She then blew up a balloon and deflated it, laying it on the counter. Then another one, twice, and did the same thing. Each got bigger as it lay in its deflated state. "This is what happened to my tummy after two kids," White remembers the woman telling her husband.

Surgeons generally recommend waiting to have surgery until you've had your last baby and at least three to six months after you're done breast-feeding. Having surgery when your youngest is close to 3 and can get in and out of his car seat makes things much easier. Ideally, you should have tried diet and exercise, but maybe you've hit a plateau, and you're within 10 to 20 pounds of a realistic weight goal. The more fit you are going into surgery, the better your results.

Bikini Body, Revisited

D Beauty Magazine 2007

"I just wanted the same form I had before. I'd try on 15 things, and nothing looked right because my nipples were at my waist."
—Shannon Bush

After Shannon Bush's second child was born, her breast looked like golf balls at the end of a pair of tube socks. Not exactly the figure she remembered from her beach days in Mexico.

And that was okay. Really. Vanity wasn't the main reason Bush decided to have a breast lift. She simply wanted her clothes to fit again.

"Nothing fit me at all anymore," the Lakewood stay-at-home mom remembers. "When I wore my old bras, I had all this skin laying in these big, giant cups. I couldn't wear dresses I used to wear. I'd try on 15 things, and nothing looked right because my nipples were at my waist."

Back to Her Old (and Improved) Self

When Beth Hughes was in high school, her mom got a tummy tuck.

"I didn't even really know what it was," Hughes remembers. "I kind of knew what she did, but she never showed me. She described muscle repair more than skin removal. I was fit and in pretty good shape before I had kids, so I didn't think much about it."

Hughes, who is 5-foot-9, weighted 145 pounds before she had kids and got up to 203 with her first pregnancy. The 29-year-old Keller resident - who dedicates most of her time to her 4-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter - joined Weight Watchers, ran, and lifted weights. She got down to 170 between kids, then down to 150 after her second pregnancy.

But her stomach still looked like it had stretched enough to hold a watermelon, then tried to shrink back up. Which it had. Twice.

"It was hard because I am young," she says. "I worked so hard losing the weight, yet I would look around at my friends and everyone at the gym, and everyone was so tight and toned, especially in the mid-section. I couldn't lose that much more weight. I was shrinking, but my stomach wasn't."

Hughes' mid-section was her main concern, but she also had some sagging and asymmetry with her breasts. And, while she was considering cosmetic surgery, she figured her thighs could use a little work, too.

She met with Dr. White. Her goal: "Just put me back together."

She decided to do a tummy tuck, liposuction on her thighs, and a breast lift. She did it all at once in March, after lining up two weeks of family help with her kids. She trained for the surgery like she would for an athletic event. Her theory was that if she was in good shape going in, her recovery would be easier, which is true, surgeons say.

Before the surgery, Hughes was a size 10-12. Now, although she weighs the same, she's a 6-8. Her waist went from 31.5 inches to 26. Not only did Dr. White remove extra skin from around her waist, but he also tightened the muscles.

"I look better than before I had the kids," she says, pulling out honeymoon pictures as proof. "I feel almost completely normal. I'd kind of gotten to a point when it was time for me again. I don't want to be the martyr mother who turns around when my daughter is 15 and says, 'Oh, I let myself go.' I wanted to get myself back to where I felt like I was on the inside."

LET'S TALK ABOUT BREASTS!

By Erin Zammett Ruddy

They've inspired sculptures, chart-topping Fergie lyrics and some of the biggest red-carpet and Super Bowl halftime-blunders ever. Oh, and they can turn grown men into drooling 13-year-olds. Yes, we're talking about boobs-those lovely lumps that sit high (for now, anyway) on our chests, declaring "I am a woman, got a problem with that?"

In a recent Glamour body-image survey of 16,000 readers, close to 70 percent reported being happy with their breasts. It's about time, says Elisabeth Squires, author of Boobs: A Guide to Your Girls. "For too long, women have been critical of their breasts." So why the, uh, lift acceptance? Squires credits super flattering bra technology and the fact that, these days, images of breasts in the media look more genetically possible and less, well, porn-y. "It used to be that the only breasts you ever saw in popular culture were fake or 'perfect,'" she says. "Women are getting that it's OK to have their own unique pair."

So how to make the most of whatever Mother Nature gave you? Here, leading doctors, bra experts and beauty and fashion gurus share everything you need to know to keep your breasts healthy and looking exactly the way you want.

I want implants. Are there still risks? Yes - this is surgery. Potential problems include infection, numbness, scar tissue complications and implant ruptures, says Steven J. White, M.D., founder of USA Plastic Surgery in Dallas. You may be tempted to bargain-hunt for implants, but remember that your health (not your wallet) is the priority. Dr. White's advice: Find an experienced doctor certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, ask to see before-and-after-photos and talk to former patient about their results.

"I Want To Look Years Younger"

Facial Rejuvenation Procedures - Like a facelift, necklift, browlift and blepharoplasty - are surefire ways to turn back the hands of time. In order to keep your facial features in harmony, your plastic surgeon may address your face as a whole and perform more than just one procedure. Regardless of the procedure that you ultimately choose, it's essential to follow a good skin-care regimen and protect your skin from the sun on a daily basis to maximize your results.

How to Get a Flat Tummy

You Could Undergo Tummy Tuck

The abdomen muscles can get stretched to a point where exercise can't help.

Years of weight fluctuations and pregnancy can leave you with a bulging belly, but if loss of elasticity prevents the skin from bouncing back and abdominal muscles are stretched to the point where exercise can't help surgical intervention may be your only recourse. From liposuction to body lift procedures, there is a full spectrum of surgical treatments to address problems of the abdomen.

Who it's for

Women who don't plan on additional pregnancies and are at or near their ideal weight with excess skin and/or prominent pooch due to pregnancy or significant weight loss.

Who it's not for

A tummy tuck is not a means of losing weight. Patients should also make a commitment to maintaining a stable weight after surgery in order to maintain results. "A tummy tuck is not for someone who has nice, firm skin and extra fat," says Rockville, Maryland, plastic surgeon Roger Friedman, MD. "To address that problem, liposuction is a better option."

The details

Through one incision in the pubic area that varies from a few inches to one that goes from hip to hip (and possibly another around the belly button), your plastic surgeon can tighten slack muscles and eliminate excess skin. Liposuction can be incorporated to address stubborn fat deposits. For women who delivered via cesarean section, the scar is often removed during a tummy tuck and likely replaced with a less obvious one.

A Beautiful Bust
by Dr. Steven J. White

The Latest Advancement

What is Optimized Rapid Recovery Breast Augmentation?

This seven-step breast implant program is the culmination of more than a decade of experience by Dr. White, which allows him to optimize every aspect of the procedure.

His goal is to create the most beautiful breasts for each patient. The operation seems deceptively simple - making the breasts bigger by putting in implants. Achieving exceptional results, however, requires detailed pre-op planning, precise surgical technique and careful follow-up. Dr. White's "Optimized, Rapid Recovery" Breast Augmentation does just that in a series of seven steps.

Step One

Involves listening carefully to understand what the patient is hoping to achieve. Does she want a natural look, which is proportionate to her body? Is she afraid she will be too big - or does she instead want the largest size that still looks natural for her body? Does she want to avoid the "stuck-on" look?

Step Two

Occurs when Dr. White takes several measurements of the breast and chest, paying close attention to asymmetries of the breasts, which is surprisingly common. Selecting the proper size implants is one of the most important aspects of breast implant surgery. Dr. White believes this is best achieved by matching the implant to the patient's tissues and chest wall and then adjusting the size according to the patient's desires.

The Three

Is comprehensive patient education. Every patient is thoroughly informed about the procedure and what to expect before and after surgery.

Step Four

Involves precise surgical technique to create the "space" or "pocket" under the muscle for the implant. Dr. White's specially designed instruments allow him to use the smallest incision to minimize the scar. Drains are not necessary since he avoids blunt dissection. Instead, he performs a precise dissection to minimize bleeding, bruising and pain, allowing for rapid recovery.

Step Five

Is when Dr. White uses "sizers" to carefully match the implant to the patient's tissues and chest wall to create the most natural look for each patient.

Step Six

Is to sculpt or shape the breast tissue (when needed) over the implant to achieve the prettiest breasts.

Step Seven

Is the last but also one of the most important: the follow-up care. Dr. White has developed a comprehensive post-op program to allow for rapid recovery and exceptional results. His surgical technique avoids bruising and minimizes pain so that his patients can begin arm range-of-motion exercises on the day of surgery. Many of his patients feel so good they go shopping or out to lunch the day after surgery.

Your Mirror: Friend or Foe?

by Jennifer Hayes

If you answered the latter, you're not alone. More than 9.27 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures were performed in the United States in 2004, and those who had them spent more than $8 billion on their procedures. It's a safe bet they didn't get along with their mirror, either.

Texas Monthly Magazine 2006 Texas Monthly Magazine 2006

If you're ready to finally kiss and make up with the mirror, cosmetic surgery might be the answer for you, too. For the first time, cosmetic surgery is more of a badge of honor than something to hide from your friends. A nip here and a tuck there simply means you value your youthful appearance and want to maintain it as long as possible. In short, you want to look as good as you feel.

If your wish list looks something like this - Angelina Jolie's lips; Cameron Diaz's cheekbones; Jennifer Aniston's eyes; Terri Hatcher's waist - you might want to put down your paper and pen and discuss the reality of the list with an experienced cosmetic surgeon.

Although the thought of these beautiful features combined seems perfect, it's really not, say local cosmetic surgeons. Genetics play a major role in everyone's appearance and body shape. Taking bits and pieces from other people you admire isn't going to make you look related to them, much less exactly like them. In fact, the results could be anything but flattering. The goal of cosmetic surgery should be to enhance what you do have so that you look like yourself, only better.

Texas Monthly Magazine 2006 Texas Monthly Magazine 2006

Abdominoplasty

Sometimes all the stomach crunches in the world won't get rid of a protruding abdomen. If this sounds familiar, especially after a pregnancy or significant weight loss, the solution may be a tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty. This is a major surgical procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and tightens the muscles of the abdominal wall to dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen.

Traditional tummy tuck techniques may result in an unnatural, operated look, particularly in the upper abdomen and around the umbilicus, or belly button. Dr. Steven J. White, a board-certified plastic surgeon with USA Plastic Surgery, uses several techniques to obtain a more natural-looking umbilicus. These techniques take more time in surgery; however, he believes the final result is worth this extra effort. For most patients, the scar is well hidden beneath the bikini line.

A tummy tuck can provide an immediate and significant improvement," Dr. White says. "Patients are often amazed by the results. Refined techniques combined with careful follow-up allow patients a quick recovery. Women usually drop several dress sizes, and men go down several pant sizes."

Breast Lift

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a procedure often performed to restore the youthful appearance to the breast after pregnancy or weight loss. Lifting the breast, elevating the nipple, and decreasing the size of the areola create this more youthful look. Breast reduction is a similar procedure except that the breast is also reduced in size. With both procedures, great care should be taken to sculpt the breast into the most aesthetically pleasing shape. Results are permanent but may be affected by significant weight gain, aging, or pregnancy.

Facelifts

Reversing the aging process through facial rejuvenation is increasingly popular as more people want to look as young as they feel.

"To achieve the most natural results, a combination of procedures is often indicated so an individualized approach is best," says Dr. White. "Attention to detail is especially important in facial surgery due to the complicated anatomy. The goal of any facial rejuvenation procedure should be to create long-lasting, natural results as inconspicuously as possible. A bad face lift is obvious to all. A good facelift is known to one, but admired by many."

Facelifts can improve the most visible signs of aging by removing excess fat, tightening underlying muscles, and re-draping the skin of the face and neck. While facelifts can be performed in various ways depending on the surgeon's preference and the patient's needs, in general, the skin is separated from the fat and muscle below. Fat may be trimmed or suctioned from around the neck and chin to improve the contour. The surgeon then tightens the underlying muscle and tissue, pulls the skin back, and removes the excess.

Results of a facelift typically last five to ten years. Recovery time for a facelift is usually one to three weeks, with final results apparent in about two months. Incision lines continue to refine for one year.

THE BEST DOCTORS IN DALLAS
THE TOP 643 PHYSICIANS IN 40 SPECIALTIES, AS VOTED BY THEIR PEERS

How We Did It

D Magazine mailed a letter to nearly 6,000 local doctors, encouraging them to visit www.dmagazine.com to cast their votes for the Best Doctors in Dallas. In our confidential online poll, we asked them to name two physicians they would send their patients or loved one to in 40 specialties. Only those with a valid Texas medical license were eligible.

An outside marketing firm tallied the results, and a panel of esteemed local physicians reviewed the list prior to publication. This list is designed with the patient in mind; therefore under the guidance of the panel, we did not include specialties in which the patient has little or no say, such as anesthesiology or pathology. Nor did we include pediatrics, which is vast enough to warrant its own feature story (last published in July 2004). We also admit that these specialties are broad in some instances. This list is extensive but by no means inclusive. If you don't see your doctor on the list, and it is someone you like and trust, you should stick with him.

Breast Implants

Dr. Steven J White with USA Plastic Surgery offers the latest advance in breast implants: the "Optimized, Rapid Recovery" Breast Augmentation. THE BENEFITS OF BREAST ENHANCEMENT

Blame it on Venus. Ever since our ancient ancestors first carved the goddess in stone, the female breast has been one of the defining characteristics of beauty, femininity and sexuality. Yet it's not just the desire for size that keeps area cosmetic surgeons in demand. There are a few other good aesthetic and practical reasons to explain why enhancement works.

Implants Boost Esteem

Curves are core to femininity. A fuller bustline makes for a sultry shape. Women can improve general body fitness by working out and choosing food carefully, but it generally takes a little outside intervention to increase breast size. Enlargement (also known as augmentation mammoplasty) can replace the fullness lost from aging, nursing infants and losing weight.

Research, Research, Research

A woman's body is her temple. To achieve personal goals, many specialists recommend that patients-to-be learn about the procedures and their practitioners. Seek a cosmetic surgeon who has the following credentials and meets other conditions, including:

  • Certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (this requires a minimum of five years of intensive surgical training following medical school, including a plastic surgery residency program and comprehensive oral and written examinations).
  • Operating privileges at an accredited hospital (a hospital review committee carefully evaluates the surgeon's education, experience and talent for your potential surgery).
  • References from satisfied patients.
  • A comfortable initial consultation. You should feel confident about your surgeon's technical skills, aesthetic judgment and ability to communicate clearly.

Steven J. White, M.D., of USA Plastic Surgery in Dallas, has performed breast surgeries for 12 years. During the Dallas Cosmetic Expo in September, he offered two presentations: "The Art of Breast Augmentation" and "The Art of Breast Enhancement." Dr. White says that the goal of the process should be "To provide the most beautiful pair of breasts for the individual, taking into account the rest of her body," he says. "Ideally, you want others to think, 'Wow, she looks fantastic! Did she or didn't she? I can't tell.' I always strive to achieve a very natural look - the best it can be for each individual."

Lifts Recapture Youth

Sag is such an ugly word! Fortunately, some patients say that a lift known as a mastopexy can work wonders. For breasts that have lost their perk after pregnancy, nursing, weight gain and loss, or simply from a few years of gravitational pull, a lift raises them back up. Nipples are repositioned to the center. Incisions follow the natural lines, excess skin is removed and the breasts are shaped to youthful glory.

Augmentation Balances Asymmetry

For many women, one breast is significantly smaller than the other. Symmetry restores confidence, making the patient more comfortable and simplifying clothing selection.

Reduction Benefits Both Men and Women

For those whose cups runneth over, a reduction is both an aesthetic and therapeutic advantage. A little whittling creates a leaner physique, as well as reducing strain on the back and shoulders. Gynecomastia, a condition in which men develop abnormally large breasts, also causes a number of men to opt for reduction. Other men - interested in using all of the resources at their disposal to look their best - have similar procedures to tighten flabby or sagging muscles in the chest area.

Procedures on the Rise

According to the American Society for Plastic Surgeons, breast augmentations were up 10 percent from 2004 and 37 percent from 2000. Lifts were up 22 percent from 2004 and a notable 76 percent from 2000. And breast reductions for men also were up by 17 percent from 2004.

Shape of Things to Come

The term plastic surgery is derived from the Greek word plasticos, meaning to mold or shape. No Barbie parts involved! Capable surgeons use their expertise to mold the body into its ideal state.

Scar Tactics

Modern enhancements leave barely a mark. A small incision is made either under the breast below the crease, around the areola's lower edge or, in rare cases, in the armpit.

ASK THE EXPERTS
BREAST IMPLANTS EXPERT

If you've experienced physical changes due to pregnancy, weight loss, or breast feeding, or simply want to enhance the natural shape of your breasts, consider the benefits that breast implants can bring to your daily life. Whether for increased self-confidence or simply because they never developed to their expectations, thousands of women desire larger, fuller, or more shapely breasts.

Optimized, Rapid Recovery

Dallas' own Dr. Steven J. White of USA Plastic Surgery offers the latest advancements in breast implants. His recommended seven-step breast implant program is the culmination of more than a decade of experience that allows him to optimize every aspect of the procedure. His goal is to create the most beautiful breasts for each patient. The operation seems deceptively simple - enhancing the breasts by using implants; however, achieving exceptional results requires detailed pre-op planning, precise surgical technique, and careful follow-up.

Step 1: Listening to You

Your Doctor should listen carefully to understand what the patient is hoping to achieve. Do you want a natural look that is proportionate to your body, or are you interested in increasing to the largest size that will still work with your body type?

Step 2: Measurements

After you have communicated your surgical needs to your doctor, he will then take several measurements, paying close attention to any asymmetries of the breast. Selecting the proper implant size is one of the most important aspects of breast-implant surgery. Dr. White believes that this is best achieved by matching the implant to the patient's tissues and chest wall before he adjusts the size according to the patient's desires.

Step 3: Patient Education

Your doctor should thoroughly educate you about your upcoming procedure and what to expect before and after surgery. Patient safety and natural-appearing results are Dr. White's primary goals; to optimize his patient's safety, he uses only doctors - not nurses or CRNAs - to give anesthesia.

Step 4: Surgical Techniques

Your doctor should use precise techniques to create the space or pocket under the muscle for the implant. Dr. White's specially designed instruments allow him to use the smallest incision to minimize any scarring. Rather than using drains, he performs a precise dissection to minimize bleeding, bruising, and pain and aid in rapid recovery.

Step 5: Natural Looks

Make sure your doctor uses sizers to carefully match the implant to your tissue or chest wall to create the most natural look.

Step 6: Shaping

Finally, your surgeon should sculpt and shape the breast tissue (when needed) over the implant to achieve attractive breasts.

Step 7: Follow-Up Care

Possibly one of the most important steps, a comprehensive post-op program allows for rapid recovery and exceptional results. Dr. White's own surgical technique avoids bruising and minimizes pain so that his patients can go shopping or out to lunch the next day.

The Right Doctor

Make sure that the surgeon you choose is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and in good standing with the American Society of Plastic Surgeons; surgeons with this certification have completed approved training and examinations in plastic surgery including cosmetic and reconstructive procedures. Always ask whether the surgery will be performed in the hospital, outpatient surgery facility, or in the doctor's office. Once your surgery is complete, your surgeon will ask you to visit for periodic checkups to ensure long-term results and address any questions or concerns you may have.

HOW TEXAS SUPER DOCTORS WERE SELECTED

When doctors get sick, who do they call? If you or a loved one has special medical needs, wouldn't it be nice to know whom medical professionals trust and hold in the highest regard? You could ask them yourself. But to save you some time, Key Professional Media asked them for you.

In Spring 2005, Key Professional Media asked more than 45,000 Texan doctors, nurse practitioners and nurse managers: "To whom would you refer a loved one or one of your patients for medical diagnosis and /or treatment?"

After tallying their replies, the research team also identified Texas doctors who had achieved special recognition from their peers or had demonstrated other indications of expertise in their specialties. The researchers also made sure each physician is properly licensed and has no history of disciplinary action.

I WANT A TIGHTER TUMMY

TUCK IT

A complete tummy tuck involves making an incision near the pubic hairline, from hipbone to hipbone, yet the incision is "placed low so it is hidden by a bikini", says Dallas plastic surgeon Steven J. White, M.D. If necessary, sagging or separated vertical muscles in the abdomen are tightened with permanent, internal sutures. Abdominal fat is reduced using liposuction or excision and then the skin and tissue are pulled down so that excess skin can be removed. Liposuction in the upper abdomen can further improve shape overall. If needed, a new "hole" is created in the skin for the navel, then the skin and underlying tissue is stitched together at the incision. In many patients, depending on the amount of excess skin, a modified tummy tuck with a smaller incision and without an incision around the navel may be possible. Dr. White adds, "Dramatic results are often seen with a tummy tuck since it narrows the waist, tightens the tummy and removes excess skin and fat."

TURNING BACK THE CLOCK

ABOUT GYNECOMASTIA

Though rarely discussed, gynecomastia (male breast enlargement) affects 40 to 60 percent of men at some point in their lives, according to ASAPS. The condition may be due to increases in fat, actual breast tissue or a combination of both. A medical evaluation is imperative before proceeding with surgery.

"Advanced technology and techniques have significantly improved the treatment of gynecomastia. In the past, surgical treatment involved cutting out excess breast tissue, but today, this is often unnecessary," says Dallas plastic surgeon Steven J. White, MD. If excess breast tissue is mostly comprised of fat, "many surgeons now prefer to use liposuction to improve the chest contour," he explains. Liposuction is the solution of choice since it allows a quick recovery, less scarring and a lower risk of side effects like nerve injury, hematoma, or contour deformity. In terms of results, dramatic improvement is frequently seen after liposuction," adds Dr. White.

NEW YEAR, NEW LOOK

A NEW LOOK
If you have been considering changing your look with plastic surgery, you can choose from a variety of procedures to sculpt your face, breast, and body. If you opt for the latter, you can choose from a variety of procedures to sculpt your features. Ear re-shaping, otoplasty, is a rewarding plastic surgery procedure that can correct prominent ears and boost self-confidence. Dr. Steven J. White, with USA Plastic Surgery in Dallas, said otoplasty should involve much more than simply "pinning the ears back." A combination of specific techniques is frequently necessary to create natural-appearing ears.

If the years have left their mark upon your face, facial rejuvenation provides a way to turn back the clock on the aging process. Whether removing the excess skin and fat around the eyes through eyelid surgery, lifting the brows and smoothening the forehead wrinkles with a brow lift, or sculpting the face and neck with a face lift, facial rejuvenation helps patients look and feel younger. "Attention to detail is especially important in facial surgery due to the complicated anatomy, and a well-trained surgeon with an artistic sense and a conservative approach is a must. The goal is to create long-lasting, natural results as inconspicuously as possible," said Dr. White.

PLASTIC SURGERY
Nasal Surgery
Improving breathing, allergies, and appearance

Do you suffer from congestion, drainage, or difficulty breathing through your nose? Do you snore? Are you bothered by nasal allergies? Do you find yourself dependent on nasal sprays or antihistamines like Claritin or Allegra to get relief? Have your allergies gotten worse since you moved to North Texas? If so, then surgery to improve how your nose works (functional nasal surgery) may be the answer for you.

Septoplasty straightens the nasal septum, while Turbinoplasty decreases the size of the nasal turbinates to improve both breathing and allergies. These procedures may be performed together or separately. Since these procedures are done to the inside of the nose to treat nasal symptoms and improve function, they are usually covered by insurance.

Are you concerned with how your nose looks? Do you feel your nose is crooked, too big or too small, too long or too short, too wide or too narrow? Are you bothered by a hump or depression of the bridge or a boxy or pinched tip? Have you suffered a broken nose in the past? Do you feel like your nose doesn't fit your face? If so, then you are not alone. Rhinoplasty, or nose reshaping, has become one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures as increasing numbers of men and women seek to improve their appearance. A new nose can provide a tremendous boost in one's self-confidence and self-esteem. Surgery to change the outside of the nose to improve appearance is generally considered a cosmetic procedure. When Rhinoplasty is combined with Septoplasty and Turbinoplasty, amazing results can be achieved, improving breathing, allergies and appearance.

Rhinoplasty is often considered the most difficult operation in plastic surgery. A poor result from nasal surgery cannot be simply "covered up," since the nose is a focal point of the face. A combination of procedures is often indicated so an individualized approach is best. A well-trained surgeon with an artistic sense is a must. Dr. White's dual background in plastic surgery and ear, nose, and throat surgery (Otolaryngology) has provided him extensive experience in nasal surgery. Dr. White's goals in rhinoplasty are not only to improve the patient's ability to breathe through the nose, but also to create a nose that appears natural and is in balance with the patient's other facial features.

PLASTIC SURGERY:
WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO UNDER THE KNIFE...

More people than ever are electing to have plastic surgery. Between 2000 and 2004, the number of people having plastic surgery jumped by 24 percent and the number continues to rise, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

"The hype surrounding plastic surgery reality television shows has also helped to promote plastic surgery, said Steven J. White MD, a board certified plastic surgeon with USA Plastic Surgery in Dallas.

"There's a greater awareness of what the possibilities can be with plastic surgery, and there is a greater acceptance by the public to have plastic surgery."

But is that really a good thing?

Dr. White says it is—when plastic surgery is done right.

THE FIRST DECISION

"Television tends to emphasize how many procedures can be done at one time, rather than stressing the importance of doing each operation well," Dr. White says.

But here are steps you can take to ensure you are finding the best surgeon for you. The first is finding a physician who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. You can be assured that an ABPS-certified doctor has graduated from an accredited medial school, has completed at least a three-year residency in general surgery and at least a two-year residency in plastic surgery. The doctor must also complete written and oral exams to be certified.
Finding someone you feel comfortable with is also important. You should feel open to talking about your goals and expectations with your surgeon. "A good doctor may not always tell you what you want to hear, but should advise you on what they believe will best help you to achieve the look you desire," Dr. White said.

KEEPING UP APPEARANCES

The 2005 cosmetic plastic surgery reference guide
By Jennifer Hayes

Abdominoplasty. For some people, all the crunches in the world won't get rid of their belly. If you are one of these people, especially if you've been pregnant or lost a significant amount of weight, the solution may be a tummy tuck. This major surgery removes excess skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and tightens the stomach muscles to reduce a protruding abdomen. This can be a good choice for women who have lost muscle and skin tone after having children.

"Patients are often amazed at the dramatic results that can be achieved," says Dr. Steven J. White with USA Plastic Surgery. "A tummy tuck can provide an immediate and significant improvement by combining muscle tightening with the removal of excess skin and fat. Women usually drop several dress sizes and men several pant sizes. I tell patients that it's not the surgery that's going to cost them—"it's the new wardrobe."

Q. How can I make sure my recovery from my plastic surgery procedure is as short as possible?

A. Advances in instruments and techniques have allowed not only safer procedures but also quicker recovery times. One of the most important factors influencing a patient's recovery is the way the surgeon performs the procedure. Precise dissection and meticulous attention to detail are critical to achieve the best results and minimize tissue trauma. This means less bleeding and bruising, as well as less pain, which translates into a faster and better recovery. Precision surgery takes a little longer to perform, but the results are well worth the extra effort, both in the final result and in the patient's recovery and overall experience. - Dr. Steven J. White, USA Plastic Surgery

Find out if the surgeon you are considering will perform the surgery in an accredited facility and employs a well-trained, specialized staff of nurses and anesthesiologists. For instance, Dr. Steven J. White, a plastic surgeon with USA Plastic Surgery in Dallas, uses doctors (anesthesiologists) rather than nurses (CRNAs) for anesthesia, and he operates in fully accredited hospitals and surgery centers. His reason is simple: safety. "I believe the goal of plastic surgery is to safely create long-lasting changes which appear natural, not overdone," White says. "the surgeon's focus should be to optimize each procedure to obtain the best results. This means taking the time to do each procedure well, rather than rushing through multiple procedures. Patients safety and the quality of the final result should be the guiding principles for every operation."

White offers the following tips for finding a plastic surgeon who has only your best interests in mind.

  • Look for a plastic surgeon whose philosophy is in line with your goals. Are you looking for the cheapest or the best? No one wants a discount brain surgeon or heart surgeon. Likewise, you should be careful not to chose a discount plastic surgeon. The old adage "you get what you pay for" is still true. Select a surgeon based on quality, not price.
  • Evaluate the surgeon's commitment to patient care as well as the quality of his or her results. One of the best ways to learn about plastic surgeons is to visit their web sites. Pay attention to the before and after photos of the surgeon's own patients to assess the quality of their work, and read the patient comments about the care they received.
  • Meet with the surgeon. The consultation should be a time for you to explain what you hope to achieve and get recommendations. This is also the time for you to interview the doctor. Does the surgeon take the time to really listen to you and answer all of your questions, or do you feel rushed? Does the surgeon explain things in a way that is easy to understand, or do you just get to talk to the nurse? Recognize that the amount of the time the doctor spends with you before surgery is often indicative of the time he will spend seeing you for follow-up visits. After surgery, do you see the doctor or just the nurse? How many times will you have to return as you heal? These are important questions to consider as you decide which doctor is right for you.
