Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) USA Plastic Surgery, Dr. Steven J. White

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a procedure that removes drooping skin and excess fat from the upper eyelids, reduces under-eye bags, and tightens the lower eyelid skin for a more youthful appearance. Your eyes determine whether you look awake, alert, tired, angry, or unhappy. Lower eyelid puffiness, dark circles, and drooping upper eyelids can misrepresent your true mood and temperament. The good news is, you do not have to live with droopy eyelids.

At USA Plastic Surgery, Dr. Steven J. White has helped thousands of patients improve the appearance of their eyes with customizable cosmetic procedures. If your eyes are not improving with sleep and a healthy lifestyle, eyelid surgery will transform them for a new glow and a rejuvenated facial appearance. There is no need to delay looking and feeling younger and refreshed.

About Blepharoplasty

Sagging skin (ptosis) and wrinkles around your eyes can affect your entire complexion and increase your perceived age. As you age, sagging skin becomes more pronounced because the amount of collagen in your skin decreases. Collagen is a protein that helps skin maintain its elasticity and firm, youthful appearance. Although supplements are an effective way to restore your collagen levels and delay the effects of aging, they are not a permanent solution. (1) Med spa treatments can also temporarily restore your collagen levels for a rejuvenated appearance, but severe wrinkles and sagging skin often require surgical intervention. A blepharoplasty will restore your eyes for a more youthful appearance and eliminate wrinkles to help you look your best.

Types of Blepharoplasty

Dr. White can perform one of several types of blepharoplasties depending on the location of sagging skin and excess fat around your eyes. Blepharoplasty is not just cosmetic because sagging skin above the eyes can affect your field of vision. In a recent study, 70% of blepharoplasties performed were functional. (2)

  • Upper blepharoplasty: During an upper blepharoplasty procedure, Dr. White will make an incision along the crease of your upper eyelid to remove excess skin and reposition it for a lifted youthful look. Many patients enjoy both the aesthetic and functional benefits of an upper blepharoplasty because it improves their field of vision and makes them look younger.
  • Lower blepharoplasty: During a lower blepharoplasty, Dr. White will make an incision inside the lower eyelid to remove excess fatty deposits and drooping skin that are causing puffiness and bulging pockets beneath your eyes. A lower blepharoplasty will help you look less tired, a common issue with aging, and it can remove the fatty deposits that are making your eyes look puffy.
  • Quad blepharoplasty: A quad blepharoplasty refreshes the upper and lower eyelids, the procedure lifts and tightens the eyes for a long-lasting, younger look. During a quad blepharoplasty, Dr. White will make incisions above and below your eyes to remove excess skin and fat that are affecting your complexion for a more youthful look.

Consultation

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) USA Plastic Surgery, Dr. Steven J. White

During the consultation, Dr. White will evaluate your overall health, skin quality, skin looseness, folds, and wrinkles. Next, he will assess your underlying anatomy and create a customized facial rejuvenation treatment plan to help you achieve the results you desire. He will discuss your goals during the consultation to create a treatment plan that meets your needs.

Blepharoplasty Preparation

To prepare for a blepharoplasty, you will need to stop taking blood thinners 1-2 weeks before the procedure and stay out of the sun. Using UV protection and taking good care of your skin with the proper skin care products will be important for experiencing the best results from your blepharoplasty.

We recommend that patients go grocery shopping and prepare meals ahead of time to prevent unnecessary trips to the store during their recovery. When you arrive for your procedure:

  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Do not wear makeup, gel, mousse, or hairspray
  • Remove your accessories (jewelry and headbands)

Blepharoplasty Recovery

Depending on your overall health and the amount of skin Dr. White needs to remove, your recovery will take 1-2 weeks. The procedure is well-tolerated and the recovery process is simple. Swelling and bruising are expected after eyelid surgery. These will start to resolve during the first week after surgery, although healing time will vary between patients. During your recovery, eye drops, bandages, and ice packs will help your body heal. If you have any discomfort around the incision areas, you can use over-the-counter medication to relieve it.

Blepharoplasty Results

After a blepharoplasty, you will no longer need to worry about drooping skin affecting your field of vision. Removing fatty deposits and drooping skin above and below your eyes will give you a more youthful complexion and help you look your best. Although your skin may sag as collagen decreases, you will be able to maintain results for many years.

Corresponding Blepharoplasty Procedures

Dr. White can combine other surgical techniques with eyelid surgery to help you meet your goals. Many patients enjoy a more youthful appearance when they combine a blepharoplasty with a facelift, or necklift to reverse signs of aging.

Facelift

A facelift, or “rhytidectomy,” is a customizable surgical procedure designed to reduce signs of aging by eliminating excess fat, tightening the muscles beneath the skin of the neck, and removing sagging skin for a younger-looking complexion. There are several variations of surgical facelifts. A skin-only lift is reserved for patients with less sagging. A mid-facelift addresses the cheeks and mid-face area. A deep-plane lift addresses deeper sagging, wrinkles, and folds. During the procedure, Dr. White will make a discrete incision along the hairline and around the ears to reposition your skin. The scar is very discrete and easily hidden. Many patients are able to turn back the clock for a rejuvenated complexion with our customizable facelifts.

Neck Lift

A neck lift is a procedure that eliminates wrinkles and sagging skin for a smoother, more youthful-looking neck. During a neck lift, Dr. White will make a small incision along your hairline behind your ears to reposition the skin on your neck to reduce wrinkles and restore your appearance. He will also remove excess skin if you have severe ptosis or wrinkles. Dr. White can combine a neck lift with a blepharoplasty for a complete makeover. Dr. White can also perform supplemental procedures such as nonsurgical skin rejuvenation. To learn more about how we can rejuvenate your face, see our blog.

FAQ

How long does blepharoplasty surgery take?

The duration of blepharoplasty surgery varies based on several factors, including the complexity of your case, whether you are undergoing upper, lower, or combined eyelid surgery, and the techniques employed. Generally, blepharoplasty takes approximately one to three hours to complete.

What is a SMAS facelift and can I combine it with a blepharoplasty?

Yes, we can combine the procedures. The SMAS is a layer beneath the skin that we can tighten to lift the jowls, elevate the cheeks, and improve your neck contour.

Does a blepharoplasty have long-lasting results?

While the results of blepharoplasty are long-lasting, they do not halt the natural aging process. The benefits achieved through eyelid surgery can be maintained for many years; however, normal facial aging will continue over time. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, protecting your skin from sun damage, and following a proper skincare routine will help maximize the longevity of your results.

Will I need time away from work after a blepharoplasty?

Yes, you will need to take 1-2 weeks off work to allow your eyelids time to heal from the procedure. Most patients are able to return to work after one week.
