Brow Lift (Upper Facelift) Dallas, TX plastic surgeon, Dr. Steven J. White

A brow lift (upper facelift or forehead lift) is a procedure that reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines by repositioning the skin on your forehead. Do you often appear more haggard or stressed than you feel? Do you look in the mirror and see an angry-looking face when you are actually feeling calm and serene? Often, issues in the forehead and eyebrow region can cause problems such as these. A furrowed brow, frown lines, and drooping, sagging eyebrows can create a tired, angry, or sad expression that does not represent your true mood.

Dallas, TX plastic surgeon, Dr. Steven J. White, performs brow lift surgery to correct these common signs of aging. This surgery focuses on correcting and lifting the eyebrows by repositioning the forehead skin to improve the appearance of low-set eyebrows. This creates an instant improvement for patients, giving them a fresher, younger, more “awakened” look. Dr. White is a seasoned brow lift surgeon and offers numerous techniques depending on the patient’s aesthetic goals and skin condition.

About Brow Lifts

Wrinkles on the forehead are a common occurrence after a certain age. As gravity pulls on the skin, collagen production decreases, repetitive movements wear on the face, and wrinkles start to develop. Additionally, both men and women can experience ptosis. Ptosis refers to the drooping or descent of the brow due to weakened supporting structures and gravitational effects. This can result in a heavy, hooded appearance of the upper eyelids and brow, potentially impairing vision and creating a tired or aged look.

With a brow lift, patients can reduce these signs of age while preserving a natural appearance. It is a popular surgery, with more than 300,000 brow lift surgeries performed in 2022. (1) And unlike temporary Botox and dermal fillers, it provides results for many years. If you have deep-set wrinkles or moderate to severe skin sagging, a brow lift can eliminate them to revive your youthful appearance and improve your outward disposition.

Before and After Photos

Brow Lift Benefits

The benefits of a brow lift include the following:

  • Reduced appearance of fine lines
  • Eliminated deep-set wrinkles
  • Restored youthful upper face
  • Brightened and rested eye appearance
  • Long-lasting results

Candidates

If your vision is obstructed from excess skin or you are experiencing sagging skin in the brow area, you are likely a good candidate for a brow lift. The best candidates for those seeking brow lift surgery, include people who have:

  • Low-set eyebrows that produce a “tired” or “frowning” appearance
  • Sagging eyelids that are caused by a droopy brow
  • Forehead wrinkles that appear near the brow
  • Overall good health; non-smokers

Personal Consultation

During the initial consultation, we will evaluate the overall health of your skin, which will include testing skin quality and looseness. Dr. White will also evaluate the folds and wrinkles of the forehead and hairline, as well as the position of the inner, middle, and outer portions of the eyebrows and the upper eyelids. This evaluation will help him to determine if a brow lift is the best procedure, and whether or not an eyelid lift is needed instead.

Preparation

Your successful brow lift outcome relies on proper preparation. Dr. White will provide you with comprehensive instructions to prepare for your procedure. General guidelines typically include:

  • Blood thinners and medications: Discontinuing certain blood-thinning medications, supplements, and herbal remedies as advised to reduce the risk of bleeding during and after surgery.
  • Smoking cessation: Ceasing all nicotine use at least two weeks before surgery, as smoking impairs healing and increases the risk of complications.
  • Medication management: Fill prescriptions ahead of time, including pain medication and antibiotics prescribed by Dr. White.
  • Transportation and post-operative assistance: Arrange for a responsible adult to drive you home after surgery and, if necessary, provide post-operative care as instructed.
  • Time off and social commitments: Plan for a period of rest and recovery following your brow lift procedure. Ensure you have adequate time off work and minimize social engagements until advised otherwise.

Brow Lift Procedure

On the day of your procedure, arrive at the office in comfortable clothing and do not wear makeup to your procedure. Before we begin the procedure, we will use an alcohol pad to cleanse the skin and place you under anesthesia. During a brow lift, one of several possible surgical techniques will be used. Some common incision approaches include along the natural upper eyelid crease or the hairline above the brow. A slightly more invasive approach is a coronal incision, which runs from ear to ear underneath the patient’s hair. The endoscopic brow lift is most often used, which is the least invasive approach. Dr. White will use sutures to close the incision to assist with the healing process so you can enjoy the full effects of your brow lift.

Recovery

Swelling and bruising are expected on the forehead and eyes after brow lift surgery, although this will vary between patients. This swelling subsides within the first 1-2 weeks. The forehead may have some decreased sensation that will improve over time. Most patients can resume modest activity in 7-10 days, with a complete recovery in about 3-4 weeks. You can use a cold compress and medication to alleviate discomfort. After 48 hours, you can gently wash your face and hair.

Corresponding Procedures

Eyelid Lift

An eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) is a procedure that removes excess skin and fat from the eyelids. Aging can cause eyelids to sag, and fatty deposits in the face can obstruct your vision. During an eyelid lift, Dr. White will make discrete adjustments to your upper or lower eyelids for a natural look. For an upper eyelid lift, Dr. White will make a small incision to remove excess fat and skin from the upper eyelid. With a lower eyelid lift, he will make a small incision inside the lower lid to remove fat deposits. If you are experiencing excess fat and skin along the upper and lower lids, we can address this with a quad eyelid lift.

Face and Neck Lift

A facelift is a procedure that reduces the appearance of wrinkles and minimizes signs of aging in the mid and lower face, while a neck lift reduces signs of aging on the neck to enhance the appearance of your skin. During a face and neck lift, Dr. White will make small, discrete incisions along the hairline and reposition your skin and underlying tissues for anti-aging benefits. This treatment is best for moderate to severe wrinkles and sagging skin that cannot be addressed through non-surgical means.

Botox

Botox is an injectable treatment that reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and also helps prevent the formation of new wrinkles in the upper portion of the face. As we age, the fat in our brows (retro-orbicularis oculi fat) atrophies. (2) Botox is a temporary measure to help you restore your appearance and counteract common changes to the face from age. The injectable contains botulinum toxin to limit the movement of the muscles in the treatment area.

FAQ

Will a brow lift address my deep forehead wrinkles?

Yes, one of the major benefits of a brow lift is the improvement of forehead wrinkles. By repositioning the underlying brow muscles and tightening the skin, a brow lift can significantly reduce deep forehead wrinkles, helping you achieve smoother and revitalized skin.

How long will the results of a brow lift last?

While the natural aging process cannot be fully halted, the results of a brow lift are long-lasting. Generally, patients can expect their lifted and rejuvenated brows to maintain their improved appearance for many years following the procedure. Lifestyle factors, such as sun exposure and skincare maintenance, can impact the longevity of your results.

Can I combine a brow lift with other procedures?

Yes, many patients choose to combine a brow lift with other facial rejuvenation procedures, such as eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) or a facelift. Combining procedures can provide comprehensive enhancement, addressing multiple concerns simultaneously and providing optimal rejuvenation.

Will there be noticeable scarring after a brow lift?

Surgeons take great care in placing incisions strategically within the hairline or other concealed areas to minimize visible scarring. Over time, any resulting scars generally fade and become less noticeable. Following post-operative instructions, including proper wound care, can help promote favorable scar healing.
