Conveniently located to serve the areas of Dallas, TX
A rhinoplasty, or a “nose job”, is a surgical procedure that corrects cosmetic irregularities and functional problems of the nose. Most of the time, patients seek to create a more aesthetically pleasing nose that complements their profile and face shape, but surgeons can customize the procedure to improve nasal breathing if necessary.
At USA Plastic Surgery, our staff is equipped to help you along the process of attaining a nose you can feel satisfied and confident with. At a consultation, you can meet with and discuss your concerns with Dr. Steven J. White, an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist with extensive training in the intricate techniques of rhinoplasty. About Rhinoplasty
The incredible benefits of rhinoplasty have stood the test of time. The American Society of Plastic Surgery cited in a 2020 study that American surgeons performed about 352,000 rhinoplasties, making it the most popular minimally invasive surgical procedure. (1) It makes clear sense why; patients can request drastic or subtle changes that transform one of their most distinguishable features. With the rhinoplasty advancements of today, surgeons can honor patients’ ethnic and gender characteristics, ensuring results are natural-looking and fitting with their overall appearance.
There is no one procedural method for rhinoplasty; Dr. White will take into careful consideration your unique facial structure and gain a clear understanding of the exact improvements you would like to achieve. Rhinoplasty produces permanent results, so any modifications to the skin, cartilage, mucous membrane, and other soft tissues must be conducted with expert skill and artistic precision. Dr. White will offer in-depth, individualized attention and feedback so that both of you can work together to find the solution you have been searching for. Rhinoplasty most often serves to eliminate perceived imperfections such as:
- Dorsal humps
- Overly large nose in relation to the face
- Unwanted depressions
- Nasal crookedness
- Flared nostrils
- Too-wide, too-narrow, or asymmetrical nostrils
- Chronic nasal obstruction
- Bulbous or pointy nasal tips
- Nasal bridge abnormalities
- Broken nasal bones
- Injury to the cartilage or septum

Types of Rhinoplasty
Primary Rhinoplasty
Dr. White can tailor primary rhinoplasty techniques to help you achieve personalized results, helping prevent the need for a touch-up or revision rhinoplasty. He may utilize an open or closed approach, depending on your needs and the severity of your perceived imperfections.
Revision Rhinoplasty
A revision rhinoplasty serves to correct abnormalities caused by a previous nasal surgery. With a revision, usually, the changes required are extensive, so Dr. White will use an open approach. For the resolution of minor issues such as a small bump, he may create satisfying results using a closed technique. Often, revisions are more complex than primaries since there are already altered changes to the nasal framework. As a result, grafts are often required with these procedures.
Nasal Fracture Repair
A nasal fracture repair requires unique rhinoplasty techniques to ensure the procedure does not cause further damage. First, Dr. White will inspect the nose for secondary issues, like septal hematoma, a condition in which blood accumulates under the skin of the septum. Dr. White will use X-ray or CT imaging to gain a better view of the state of injury to the cartilage and/or bone before devising a surgical plan of action.
Septoplasty
A septoplasty is a procedure similar to a rhinoplasty, but the procedural techniques are solely focused on fixing functional, internal issues within the nose. This procedure is ideal for those who require medically necessary changes to their nasal structures but want to preserve the same aesthetic appearance. Dr. White can perform a septoplasty to correct a deviated septum and the accompanying issues of chronic post-nasal drip and/or airway obstruction. He will only need to utilize a closed approach to create functional improvements, but he can also combine this procedure with cosmetic rhinoplasty techniques to perform a septorhinoplasty.
Turbinate Surgery
A turbinoplasty (turbinate surgery) involves altering the nasal turbinates, tiny bony structures within the nasal cavity. They are covered with a mucosal membrane that serves to humidify the air and regulate airflow. In people with severe allergies that cannot be controlled with steroids or antihistamine sprays, surgeons often reduce the size of the inferior (lower) turbinate to promote easier breathing. (2)
Candidates
Candidates for rhinoplasty should be in ideal health without any blood-clotting disorders or other conditions that interfere with healing processes. Patients should be at least 16 years old – the age by which the nasal bones fully develop – but Dr. White will perform the surgery on younger patients if significant issues are present.
Dr. White prefers patients to be non-smoking individuals, but he will make accommodations for smokers if they commit to quitting for at least a month before surgery. Nicotine constricts blood vessels and slows down recovery, so it is important that patients consider this when undergoing any invasive surgery. Finally, all candidates should have realistic expectations that Dr. White can safely accomplish.
Personal Consultation
During your consultation at USA Plastic Surgery, Dr. White will ask you about your nasal issues and ask you about the enhancements you would like to achieve with this procedure. If he finds that you are a great candidate for a rhinoplasty, he will help you better understand the surgery and outline what you need to do to prepare, his recommended techniques, and the downtime required. He will assess your medical history and recent blood tests to promote the most stringent safety standards. He will take accurate measurements of your nasal proportions and face and may take photographs to have as a surgical reference. At the end of your appointment, you will be able to ask any remaining questions. Dr. White wants you to feel confident in your decision, so he will take the time necessary to thoroughly explain the potential risks and benefits.

Preparation
The preparation required for your rhinoplasty is one of the most important aspects of attaining the quality results you are searching for. Dr. White will ensure that you comprehend all instructions regarding medication use by reviewing your current prescriptions and/or daily supplements. You should stop all blood thinners a couple of weeks before your surgery date, including common medications like aspirin and ibuprofen. If you smoke, you should quit at least a month before surgery to restore circulatory functioning. Finally, you should avoid alcohol in the days leading up since it can act similarly to a blood thinner and cause more swelling.
Rhinoplasty Procedure Options
Depending on the alterations you will require, Dr. White’s anesthesiologist will administer general anesthesia, or he will administer local anesthesia with sedative medication. He will then utilize one of two general methods to access the internal structures of the nose: the “closed” or “open” approach. With an open rhinoplasty, Dr. White will make an incision across the separating tissue between the two nostrils, the columella. He will use this incision to gain full visualization by pulling back the nasal skin and making the necessary adjustments to the cartilage and bone. Sometimes, patients require a more extensive approach that includes a cartilage or bone graft, typically collected autologously- from the patient’s body. Dr. White will place sutures to fix the cartilage into correct alignment with the rest of the nasal architecture.
“Open” rhinoplasties are usually recommended for patients who need more comprehensive surgical changes, but it offers surgeons an advantage since it grants them better visualization into a patient’s anatomy. (3) For a closed rhinoplasty, Dr. White will only need to make an incision within each nostril, avoiding the need for a columella incision. Patients can expect to benefit from a shorter downtime due to its less invasive nature.
Recovery and Results
After your procedure, you may experience swelling and bruising for around 2 weeks, but these side effects will gradually diminish with time and proper aftercare. Dr. White may include nasal packing to help the tissues heal in the correct placement and to limit bleeding. In addition to internal support, he will prescribe a nose splint for you to wear for the first couple of days during your recovery. After Dr. White removes the splint at a follow-up appointment, you will be able to notice improved contours with some accompanying swelling. It may take a few months for the cartilage to fully heal and reveal your final look, but you should be able to go back to work within just 1 to 2 weeks. Dr. White will provide you with further personalized instructions to facilitate a comfortable, speedy recovery.
