Our eyes often dictate whether we look awake and alert, or tired, angry or unhappy. Issues such as lower eyelid puffiness, dark circles or drooping upper eyelids can misrepresent our true mood and temperament. For some patients, these features do not improve, even with plenty of sleep and living a healthy lifestyle. If you are unhappy with the appearance of your eyelids, cosmetic eyelid surgery offered by Dallas, TX plastic surgeon, Dr. Steven J. White, may offer you the improvement you seek. Also known as blepharoplasty, this surgery can remove drooping skin and excess fat of the upper eyelids, reduce under-eye bags and tighten the lower eyelid skin. Blepharoplasty gives patients a new glow and a rejuvenated facial appearance. It can help women and men look and feel younger and refreshed.
Good candidates for eyelid contouring are men or women who demonstrate:
· Bags or puffy bulges under the eyes (fatty deposits)
· Fullness of the upper eyelids (fatty deposits)
· Excess skin diminishing the natural fold of the upper eyelids
· Excess skin and wrinkling of the eyelids
· Impaired vision due to hanging skin on the upper eyelid

"Excited about the fact of looking younger and being treated differently, I decided to go with the best of the best and that is Dr. Steven White. After stumbling across a magazine article and hours of research I felt very confident because he is so focused on keeping patients alive, he is prepared for any and every complication that could arise. This gave me more confidence and I was able to relax plus he makes you feel like you are his only patient. Dr. White is highly respected by the nurses at the hospital and the office staff is very welcoming. After three elective surgeries, I am more excited to see my reflection in the mirror and feeling younger. I am happy with the results."- G.R. / Google / Jun 11, 2020
"I had a breast augmentation done with Dr. White about 12 years ago and have been very happy with how natural feeling/looking my results have been for so many years. As I’ve gotten older and gratefully become a Mom, my body has changed so decided to pursue options for firming up other parts of my body. I work out daily (HIIT workouts) and have cleaned up my diet, but now well into my 40’s, still had parts of my body that wouldn’t firm up as preferred. I read and studied many cosmetic surgery articles about what I thought would fix my body problems, created a priority list, and then scheduled a consultation with Dr. White. Thankfully, I didn’t have to waste time researching other Plastic Surgeons because I have always known him to be “my guy” especially since I’m living proof of his superior artistic skills (per my breast augmentation 12 years ago). Dr. White attentively listened to “my plan” for tackling my concerns and we both got a good laugh because I was very prescriptive about what we were going to do and when. After the mini comedy, Dr. White shared his expert suggestions which made much more sense to me. He also explained the why’s behind my selected modifications so I understood how much more effective it would be to focus on my arms first then tackle the upper part of my face (instead of the entire face at once) then undergo a tummy tuck solo instead of including lower body lipo simultaneously. Although I wanted everything done at once to get it all over with, I understood Dr. White’s strategy and how critical the healing process is to gaining natural and long-lasting results (much like my breast augmentation). I am 5.5 weeks post my arm lipo procedure and extremely happy with the results! I have followed every bit of the post care recovery guidance provided by Dr. White & couldn’t have imagined a better outcome. I have had many questions leading up to the surgery and mostly as I was going thru the healing process…how extremely grateful I am to the beautiful support staff ladies at the office who have always answered my calls and responded to my emails in an expedient fashion to help me feel at ease. I am now a couple of weeks from my facial rejuvenation procedure (slight forehead reduction, eyebrow lift and upper/lower blepharoplasty) and know without a doubt that I will once again be in the best hands of Dr. White, Dr. Zipper (anesthesiologist) and their support staff. I will author another review 5.5 weeks after my upcoming procedure to share my results and will also do the same after my tummy tuck successfully concludes, scheduled for mid-October. If you are reading this review and are going back and forth about who you want to select as your surgeon, STOP! You’re wasting your time, energy and money quite frankly. Dr. White is the best in the nation and my results from 12 years ago and 5.5 weeks ago are proof!"- T.T. / Google / Aug 07, 2021
"I've had the pleasure of having Dr. White as my surgeon 2x now (tummy tuck and 1st half of facial rejuvenation) and will have the second half of facial rejuvenation (lower face and neck) in June. He is the ONLY surgeon I would trust with my body and life. His motivation is to get the best possible outcome with every surgery. He is not only a fantastic surgeon but also a caring man with a great sense of humor and is a patient's biggest cheerleader. His positivity is infectious. My tummy is still flat after almost 2 yrs.Yes he is more expensive but worth the money. He is generous with his post-op follow ups and time. The ladies that run the office: Melanie, Jamie and Ashley and not only beautiful but intelligent, well-trained and compassionate.I now live in Colorado but he is my only choice for a plastic surgeon. His consultations alone are worth it because he explains so much about each procedure and has phenomenal videos."- C.W. / Healthgrades / May 02, 2022
What to Expect
Blepharoplasty may either be performed on the upper eyelid only or the lower lid, or both. The most common problem with the upper eyelid is drooping excess skin. Not only does this look unappealing, but it can also obstruct vision for a patient. This is corrected with an incision that is placed along the natural fold of the eyelid and extracting any excess fat and skin. For the lower eyelid, treatment will improve any appearance of bulging and sagging below the eye. Incisions may be made just slightly below the lash line, or a transconjunctival incision may be a better option as the cut is made inside the lower eyelid, which eliminates scarring. Through either incision, fatty tissue and excess skin is removed. A lower lid lift does not necessarily improve the dark circles that may occur under the eyes. In this situation, we may recommend a skin rejuvenation procedure such as laser treatment or a chemical peel to assist with discoloration.
Eyelid Surgery Recovery
Eyelid surgery is performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation. Patients will be sent home and will be advised to keep their heads elevated for the first several days. Bruising and swelling will occur and may last for several weeks. It takes approximately 3-4 weeks for the results to appear. This surgery leads to very minimal scarring due to the location of the incisions. Not only will patients look rejuvenated and refreshed, but also many will have improved vision due to the skin imperfection being removed.
Blepharoplasty cost vary depending on if both upper and lower eyelids or If only one eyelid is addressed. Because this surgery is considered cosmetic, in most cases, insurance will not apply. However, for some patients where vision was affected, insurance coverage is possible depending on the carrier.
Rejuvenate Your Look
Blepharoplasty is a common procedure that can make a big difference in someone’s life. For women in particular, putting on makeup can be difficult if hanging skin exists on the upper eyelid, and even with makeup on, the bags and circles under the eyes cannot be improved. Eyelid surgery creates beautiful, soft results that can be long lasting and life changing. What Is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty refers to eyelid surgery and is designed to remove the excess fat, along with skin and muscle, from the upper and lower eyelids. It is the second most common aesthetic procedure performed by plastic surgeons.
A properly performed blepharoplasty procedure will brighten the face and restore a more youthful appearance. In some patients the procedure will improve vision by removing the excessive skin of the upper eyelids, which can hang down and interfere with peripheral vision.
Scars are a result of any surgical procedure. The incisions made to accomplish the goals of the procedure are barely visible after several months as they are placed within the normal creases and folds of the upper and lower eyelids. In patients who only need removal of fat from the lower eyelids, the incision can be made on the inside of the eyelid, and will therefore result in an invisible scar.
Fine Wrinkles & Dark Circles?
The blepharoplasty procedure will not eradicate the wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet) nor will it elevate droopy eyebrow. There are other procedures designed for these purposes. Dark circles under the eyes may improve a bit if this is related to large bags, but most often the dark appearance of the lower eyelid skin remains.
Am I a Good Candidate?
The best patients are those who are healthy, psychologically stable and well motivated. Some medical conditions may increase the risk of blepharoplasty surgery such as thyroid disease, high blood pressure, and patients who do not make sufficient tears to keep their eyes well lubricated.
Eyelid Surgery Risks?
Fortunately, when performed by a competent plastic surgeon, complications are infrequent and minor. All patients will experience some bruising and swelling for a few days after the surgery. In addition, a temporary problem with closure of the eyelids is usually seen. Some may have temporary blurring of their vision, usually due to the ointments applied to the incisions post operatively. In rare instances, the lower eyelid may be pulled down causing an ectropion. If this does not resolve on its own, further surgery may be necessary. The theoretical complications of any surgical procedure, such as bleeding, infection, wound disruption and heavy scarring are also possible, but rare.
