As humans, the nose is one of our most prominent features. It is important to our overall appearance that it is well shaped, functions properly, and fits within the natural contours on our face. For those unhappy with the shape, size or proportion of their nose, rhinoplasty (cosmetic nose surgery) may offer the improvement they seek. Dallas, Texas plastic surgeon, Dr. Steven J. White, performs rhinoplasty surgery and creates natural, soft results. There are many variations to the rhinoplasty procedure. The technique Dr. White uses will depend upon your individual features and aesthetic goals. Alterations can be made to change your nose angle, reshape the tip, narrow the nostrils or change the size or width of the nasal bridge. Dr. White will discuss your options with you during your pre-op consultation.
Rhinoplasty, or nose job, offers benefits to individuals of most any age. However, children and teens should wait until their facial growth is complete. For girls, this typically occurs around age 16, and for boys at age 18. Good candidates for a rhinoplasty include healthy individuals with any of the following issues:
- A nose that is disproportionately large for the face
- A hump or depression on the nasal bridge
- A wide shape nose
- A nasal tip that droops
- An enlarged nasal tip
- Excessively flared nostrils
- An off-center or crooked nose
- A nose that is asymmetrical caused by injury or birth
- A nose that impairs breathing
"For years I have had breathing problems. Dr. White quickly diagnosed the reason for my breathing issues. He performed surgery to reduce the size of the turbinates in my nose. He thoroughly explained the procedure so there was no doubt as to what would happen. The process went exactly as Dr. White explained. He and his staff were superb in making me comfortable with the process. After the surgery I was amazed at how much better I could breathe. Sinus infections are also a thing of the past. I can't thank Dr. White and his staff enough for making a real life change in my breathing. I highly recommend Dr. White and I recommend considering this procedure if the conditions warrants."- R.J. / Google / Sep 30, 2014
"Dr. Steven White has provided me with a wonderful feeling about my look. I am 6 days post my third procedure to complete my look. I had a receding hairline with an extremely high forehead, drooping brows, upper lids, one lid that drooped more than the other, puffiness under my lower lids, sagging jowls, deep lines in and around my nose and mouth. I undertook all these procedures to ensure I had a natural look, without the stretched look that I have seen on some cosmetic patients. Dr.White has perfected his surgeries to ensure the best results for any procedure he performs. I knew after the first surgery, that I would never allow another surgeon to perform a cosmetic procedure on me. He is attentive to every detail prior to surgery, during surgery, and after the procedure ensuring optimal results. His surgical results are truly amazing and he is dedicated to best practices in his field. With a new fresh look it is impossible not to smile with confidence: "Smile and the world smiles with you." Dr. White is the only cosmetic surgeon I would recommend to someone seeking to improve their appearance."- Anonymous / RateMDs / Jan 16, 2015
"If you are researching plastic surgeons and are struggling to select the right one, look no further. Everything about Dr White, including his wonderful staff, made my experience of having a rhinoplasty / septoplasty one of the best things I've ever done in my life. I shopped around and visited with many different surgeons in the Dallas area, and while many of them have very good credentials and plenty of decent reviews, none of them even came close in comparison to Dr White. Let's just say, he had me at hello. He was so careful during the initial consultation with me, he spent over an hour just talking with me, looking at my nose, commenting on what he would do, discussing my fears and concerns, and educating me on the process as well as what I should look for if I were to choose another Dr which I thought was very cool. Additionally, the preparation that he puts into your surgery makes you feel like you are his only patient. He spent hours taking photographs of my nose, and when I asked him why he takes so many (over 300!), he said it's because he takes the best ones and puts them up in the operating room so he can make sure he is doing the best possible job to fix the things I don't like about my nose. I was very fearful about undergoing surgery (I have young kids and those fears do sink in about something happening on the operating table), I was fearful that the results would make me look fake or would completely change my appearance and I wouldn't be me anymore, and I was also fearful that the Dr would make a mistake and cut off my ability to breathe because I was having my nostrils made smaller and for some reason I thought this might effect my ability to breathe thru my nose. What became apparent very quickly was Dr White has done hundreds of nose jobs (both outside and inside the nose), and given he started his career as an ENT, he has about the best understanding of the anatomy of the nose than anyone. He also operates in a highly regarded hospital, and uses real anesthesiologists who know what they are doing to keep you safe during surgery. In the end, I couldn't have imagined a better result and my nose is beautiful, I feel beautiful for the first time in my life, and my breathing is actually BETTER than before the nose job because he worked his magic on the inside of my nose too. If you are considering any other doctor in the Dallas area, you are crazy. Don't do it - Dr White should be your first and last stop and you will be very pleased with the results. Dr White really cares about making his patients happy. One last thing, Dr White told me that 50% of the rhinoplasty procedures he does are revision surgeries. Now that should be evidence enough that he knows what he is doing! Don't go anywhere else or you could be in that group of people who are going back a second time and paying way more than the first time to fix the mistakes of a less experienced and qualified surgeon!!"- Anonymous / RateMDs / Jan 20, 2015
"I was very nervous about getting my nose done. I've wanted it done for a long time and wanted to find the right doctor to do it. When I found Dr. White I knew who was going to do my rhinoplasty! He is the nicest, most caring doctor I have ever been too, and really listens to what you have to say. I had a bump at the top of my nose and it was also crooked at the bottom. He made it look beautiful! It is now the most favorite feature on my face when it used to be what I absolutely hated! The recovery process went great, I barley had any swelling or bruising and it just keeps turning out better and better as it heals. It's only been 3 months since my surgery and it looks GREAT! I recommend Dr. White to anyone who wants ANY surgery done because, honestly he is the best and why would you want someone who isn't as good or as qualified as him to work on your body?"- Google User / Google / Jun 06, 2012
"I could not be more pleased with my overall experience with Dr. White! He sincerely cared not only about what I had to say as a patient, but my happiness as a person. The same goes for his office staff, they're great. Dr. White is definitely a perfectionist when it comes to his work, and I could not be happier with the outcome of my rhinoplasty. I had been considering one for years, and after I broke my nose, I decided to have the procedure done. I can finally breathe normally, my allergies are virtually gone, along with the bump that I used to have on my nose. I love it! The pain of the procedure and the recovery was minimal, and the hospital nurses could not have been more attentive to me afterwards. From my initial consultation to my follow-up visits, Dr. White was incredibly professional and kind, and I would recommend him to others without hesitation."- Google User / Google / Jun 06, 2012
There are a couple of different ways to perform nose surgery, that being the closed technique and the open technique. Many plastic surgeons prefer the open rhinoplasty method because this approach allows them to gain a better view of the inside of the nose, as well as greater access to its support structures. The incision is made between the nostrils or under the nose near the nostrils. Once this incision is made, the skin is pulled back and the bones, cartilage and tissue within the nose are exposed so that reshaping and reconstruction can occur. Once the incisions are closed, scarring is minimal and will not be seen. Closed rhinoplasty is less invasive. It is generally used when only mild reshaping is needed, or if the tip of the nose is being addressed
Rhinoplasty is considered an outpatient procedure. It is performed in an accredited surgical facility under general anesthesia. Patients will be swollen and bruised around the eyes and nose for up to 2 weeks. These are the primary side effects after surgery, but they will go away quickly if proper care is taken. Nasal packing, which is the insertion of gauze or cotton into the nasal chamber to control bleeding may be used. After surgery, patients will wear a nose splint for a couple of days. Once this splint is removed, the newly shaped nose will be revealed. It can take a few months for the nose to gain its sensation, as well as its final contour and softness.
This is a specialized, tailored surgery, thus the cost will vary depending on the surgical case, as well as the aesthetic goals of the patient. Severe cases of nasal reconstruction surgery involving skin or cartilage grafting will increase the overall cost.

What Will My Nose Look Like?
In general, rhinoplasty (cosmetic nose surgery) is designed to reduce excess cartilage and bone in the nose, removing irregularities and bumps to give a straightened, smooth and, usually, smaller appearance. Adding tissue to enhance certain features of the nose can also occur. The overall trend in modern rhinoplasty is away from over-reduction of tissue that can reduce the ability to breath through the nose and towards individualized treatment of each segment of the nose to give a balanced and refined look without compromising function.
Usually, Rhinoplasty takes from three to five hours depending on the complexity of the condition of the nose. Nearly all rhinoplasty operations are done as outpatient surgeries.
This depends again on how complex the procedure is, but in general most patients experience five to seven days of purple discoloration and swelling around the eyes and upper cheeks. The nose itself will be swollen for around ten to fourteen days or longer, but subtle resolution of the swelling at the tip of the nose can take months to go away.
Insurance Pay Policy?
The condition described is usually associated with a deviated septum or a bent internal framework of the nose. Most of the time this results from trauma, such as a broken nose, but many patients with this condition cannot recall an episode where this might have occurred. The condition described in this question however, could also result from allergies or the two conditions can exist simultaneously. Careful examination is needed before surgery to separate the two conditions. While individual insurance policies can vary, in general, functional surgery to improve breathing is considered a covered benefit in many group policies. If additional correction of a cosmetic deformity of the nose is done at the same time the cost of this part of the procedure is usually not covered by insurance.
Nose Growth, Postoperatively?
In general, our noses tend to elongate as we enter the middle years of our life and drooping of the tip of the nose can occur in the later years as elasticity disappears from the body. While undergoing a cosmetic rhinoplasty as a teenager or young adult will not prevent the effects of aging on the nose, the final shape that results from this surgery is expected to last a lifetime and regrowth of bumps and deformities corrected by the operation is a rare occurrence.
